Adorama says in their preorder emails that they will not charge credit cards until the item ships.

Another option for USA members who don't want to wait may be GREENTOE. but don't expect a big discount.

Through Greentoe they can. Not sure how it works but they are all USA authorized. I got a grip through them a few years ago at a small discount off MSRP

Sure they can. They just can't advertize it. If you want to know the real price, pick up the phone, or better yet go to the store. Ask them if they have any "new open box" items available. No harm in asking.

It looks like B&H is closed entirely tomorrow, and order processing stopping at 7p today. But Adorama is still processing orders until tomorrow at 12:30p, and it looks like they aren't closing the store until 2pm. So hopefully if the shipment is late-ish, they'll be able to send them out.

There is no way that Adorama doesn't already have the lenses in their possession if even local places received them yesterday or this morning.

I did notice that they switched the page for the lens from Pre-Order to Backorder/Add to Cart, and was thinking that was triggered when they had them in hand.
Also saw a couple of NPS members on a Facebook group say they'd received their Nikon-to-Adorama shipment notice today. Are those shipments different from Adorama's normal supply? Made me wonder if that was a sign the general shipment was still on it's way to Adorama.

I think that is almost certainly correct.
My understanding is that they are simply extras that a company wouldn't otherwise receive. Nikon says they will send Adorama XXXX copies. In addition, for NPS members who request priority delivery and select Adorama as their place of order, Nikon adds a lens for each of those orders to Adorama's overall shipment.
I could be wrong, but I believe that is how it works.
Regardless, I don't hold much hope that mine will go out today. It sounds like those that will ship already have received their notices. The temporary charge on my card seems unlikely to mean anything more than verification that I have the funds when they do, eventually, have a lens available to ship to me.
I'll admit disappointment.

That is, at the very least, interesting. I suppose that we will know soon enough. 24 hours from now, they'll have shipped, or they won't have.

Ordered from B&H on 8 Jan - just saw online order status change to: "In stock, order sent to warehouse" a few minutes ago. Hopefully it ships before they close this evening.

No they cannot and if they do, they risk being penalized by Nikon.
