Lens collar dilemma for 100-400

I have a sony a6500 with a mc-11 and a sigma 100-400. I also have a sigma 18-35.

I’m looking a buying a lens collar for the telephoto zoom. I’m tempted by the Ishoot product. The dilemma is that they have one for the lens itself and they also have one for the mc-11.

With the one for the lens, it seems it would split more evenly the weight of the lens on one side of the adapter and the camera on the other.

With the one for the mc-11 it would use the mount to put weight on both side. It would also allow me to use it for my other sigma adapted lens.

Any one could share their view?

Thanks

If the worry is for stability when shooting, I'd suspect the lens collar would be better under the lens...that would be much better for weight distribution.

If the worry is stress or strain on the camera mount, either way would work - the MC11 would be absorbing all of the pressure - so the camera body would be fine and bearing no weight. As long as you trust the MC11 mount to be strong enough to have the 100-400mm hanging off the end of it for long periods of time, you'd probably be OK. Also, if you intend to often be shooting with the 100-400mm on a tripod or monopod where you will usually have one hand on the lens barrel for control, aim, and adjusting zoom and focus rings, that will bear some of the weight so you would usually be fine.

I'd only recommend against mounting by the adapter if most of the time, your 100-400mm would be untouched, mounted to the tripod, and hanging all its weight on the MC11 unsupported for hours on end...in that case, the collar around the lens barrel would be more secure.

Ultimately, i opted for no collar at all (same combo as you) but i was pretty close to pulling the trigger on the mount based collar as i have one other adapted lens and figured i'd get more mileage out of it. main reason i opted for no collar at all is because as much as i love the 100-400 i ultimately wanted more reach and was not happy with the sigma or canon 1.4 TCs (it isn't that the quality isn't good - its the loss of light) so i am saving to go with the 150-600 or 60-600 instead, both of which come with collars.

Thanks for the insight. I’m really not a tripod/monopod shooter but have not had a more than a kg lens before. The reasoning for me is that with the adapter collar I can also use the mount with my 18-35, which is also a heavier lens.

As for the reach, I’m using a 6500 so I get the equivalent reach of a 150-600 with the 100-400.

if you go with either, we'd love to hear back how the fit and function are.

After many readings and a long reflexion, I decided to go with the ishoot collar for the MC-11 adapter. This way I can use it with both my 100-400 and my 18-35.

I had the chance to quickly try this tonight and so far it seems to balance the lens, adapter combo quite well. The fact it is on the adapter, it also allows me to change the lens while maintaining the camera on the tripod. This is super quick and efficient.

I will try to revert back with pictures.
