I preordered the MC-21 and reading the description it says that it will work with listed sigma EF mount glass. Would it be a safe bet to assume it will allow Canon EF glass to work on it as well? I couldn’t find the answer anywhere. Thanks.

I would say it's no guarantee that it would work well. There isn't an answer because it isn't out yet.

If we look at the past with the EF-E-Mount version, we can see that Canon EF Glass works meh-to-decent while the Sigma EF works way better, but still not as good as native E-Mount lenses. This level of compatibility has varied greatly through firmware updates.

You would just have to wait and see.

Basically Sigma make their EF adapters to allow their own EF mount lenses to work with other mount systems. There is no need for them to try and make these adapters work with non-Sigma lenses and no incentive for them to do so. So if their adapters do work with other EF mount lenses then it is just a happy conicidence - no more.

Based on my experience it seem to have taken Metabones a long time to go from working well with a limited range of EF mount lenses to being in the postion to cover almost the full gamut of EF mount lenses in existence (a considerable feat).

Therefore it will be very interesting to see how third party EF-L compare to Sigma’s MC-21 when and if they appear.

Metabones probably has the more obscure lens interfaces well reverse engineered, but there are others such a Zhongyi, Kipon and Viltrox that have also given this compatibility their best shot - and some others again who have been more “also-ran”.

No word from any supplier beyond Sigma as of yet - I suppose we will soon enough see “just” how compatible the MC-21 is beyond Sigma products - but as noted it is not in their brief to give assured performance beyond their own EF mount products.

Nevertheless it is very probably that quite a lot of Canon made EF mount lenses will be compatible to some degree or another - just which ones? .... we will have to wait and see.

Do be sure to tell us when you get yours. Many of us are waiting to hear. Nothing much- just a rundown of exactly what lenses work, what lenses don't work, speed and functionality in AF-S and AF-C, face detect, eye detect, and accuracy. You know- the basics.

Let me express my appreciation in advance.

Edit: Forgot to mention- a report on IS would be nice, while you are at it.

Thanks again.
