Canon Australia - Slack!!!

Wow... i think the recent price drop could have something to do with the recent increase of the Australian dollar do you think?
Teds in the city are a usual rip off selling it at 1999... but they
have price matching, so if they have it in stock quote them that
rainers camerahouse just a few doors down are selling it for 1800
LOL. however these stores havent got it yet...

god ted just makes u work that extra bit more :/

also i went to photocontinental today they already sold their first
shipment waiting on the 2nd lot.... their price is 1868.

for those who have friends or rellos going overseas, get them to
buy the camera for you in THEIR NAME... it might mean you have to
wait untill they get back, but your saving another $180 which means
it costs $1620 if u get it from camerahouse !!!!

all these prices are for the kit
According to the Canon Australia website, the 300D will be
available early October. (1st week so i've heard) They still
haven't announced the official RRP. Most people seem to be
estimating $1999. It would be nice of them to make the
announcement so we can actaully find the best place to order one
from.

I'm dying to get my hands on one, even just to play with in a store
while i find the best price. ;-)

After also looking at the prices of lenses and flashes i think i
might order them off the net. I can't imaging anyone in Australia
coming close to what some places are selling them for on the net.
Canon must be making heaps off the accessories in Australia. With
the Aussie $ doing well it makes things even more attractive. Does
anyone have any experience with e-tailers on the net. (wanting new
gear) I have checked places like http://www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au and
they still can't compete with overseas prices.

It seems that they have shown up on the east coast and the west
coast but South Australia has been bypassed.
No luck in Melbourne either. :( Michael's is the only place I could find that says that they have it, and they are still filling back-orders. Most stores are hoping that they will get it on Monday next week.

I'm in Perth and have had a couple of messages from retail stores in the city saying that their 300Ds are now in stock... but all at $1995... I'm picking up mine from Midland Camera House tomorrow for $1799 (Kit)... I had a play with one last week and thought it was great... I was looking at a 10D, but the 300D will be more than good enough for the next 12-18 months, I'll accumilate a couple of good lenses over that time and by then the next evolution of the 10D should be available.

Mine's from dirtcheap at $1750. Plus shipping. All the Melbourne shops I spoke to wouldn't move from $1999, nor throw in a bag or other kit. Ah well.

My logic was that preodering might get a lower price, whereas if you walk into a retailer once it's in stock you don't have any bargaining power.

Hopefully that was right :-)

Certainly worth shopping around for the accessories as well..I did a walk through the Camera Shops in Elizabeth street Melbourne....

the exact same Sandisk Ultra 512 Mb Compact Flash card varied in price from $313 to $350 to a whopping $499!!

the 256mb prices were $162 - $180 and $299 -

not sure what price list the guy in that last shop was looking at!!

People have posted cheaper prices around for these cards...but at the end of the day I was happy to get it there and then while I picked up my camera....which I also paid a bit of a premium for at $1999...but at least got some extras like free printing and a camera course thrown in:)

the reason why camerahouse is cheaper is cos it has a bigger buying power, its a huge national group and purchase bulks amounts, DCC is a division of camerahouse, just not a shopfront, hence the almost identical prices.

smaller shops with no big buying power will charge more.

Yup, it's amazing how many people don't do the research. It allows the retailer to give people a "great deal". But even $313 is a lot for 512Mb today.

Where did you get your camera? I can't find any retailer in Melbourne with the 300D.

I pre ordered mine with a $400 deposit from Michaels Camera House - Elizabeth St....about 2 weeks ago...the guy told me today they got theirs in last week...but every one of them went to pre orders...they no longer have any in stock...and I think are still waiting to fill current orders...

the other camera stores were hoping to get theirs in the next day or so...when I asked about the 300D they said they weren't available yet.....they were a bit shocked to see me actually holding one in a plastic bag:) For some reason Michaels got their batch earlier...

It's no wonder we have to pay top dollar at the stores when they can't get the things as fast as they can sell them...

It seems like people are going nuts trying to get them...my only suggestion is put in an order somewhere...or wait a month or so until the dust settles..and you can actually get them off the shelf...but then maybe it will be longer..who knows! All the best.

Theres a camerahouse rght here in newcastle and i'm betting any money they won't let me have it for under $1,999

They probably won't have it in stock either... :(

I've found the best place to get good, fast & reasonably priced memory cards is on ebay... Just recieved a 256Mb CF Card that I bought on ebay on Monday for $92+$5 freight. All sizes up to 2Gb are available at really good prices... Just check the sellers feedback reports to ensure they have previously delivered what they are promising.

Thanks for that. I have an order with a small Duty-Free retailer; they only ordered 8 units. I am on top of the list, but I am wondering if it will be weeks before I get it. I rang Michael's, and some other Melbourne camera stores, and, while Michael's said they only had enough to fill back orders, other places seemed to think they would get theirs next Monday. I don't know if I can wait that long!

The card I got is supposed to be a bit higher speed "The Ultimate memory for High End Photography"...hence it was more expensive than the plain jane variety....but maybe we don't really need the higher speed with the 300D? Maybe I was just sucked in and spent more than I needed to! lol
Well, you have your camera. I don't. How goes it?
After spending many visits to this forum ..and reading all the hype about the coming of this 300D..when it would be released etc etc....is quite amazing to actually have the thing....felt like I was holding the Holy Grail or something as I walked through the streets of Melbourne today....with slight trepidation that a herd of salivating camera enthusiasts might mug me at any turn!

Anyway..the camera...is certainly bigger than it looks in the picture..I had a regular Eos 300 slr and is buliker than that...but fits well in the hand...has a good solid look and feel despite the plastic...

....I'm pretty much a newbie with this whole SLR photography thing...but already I can see the big advantage of going digital...instant feedback via LCD review of what you've actually just taken a picture of...will help me learn a lot more about this photography caper..is great being able to just go ballistic trying things..whereas experimentation with a film slr felt like a costly exercise...

quality of pics is very good..but really need a chance to go on a bit of a shoot somewhere with it during the day..and compared to what I've used previously (Digital Camera feature of a video camera!) is sensational!

..software and menu system is all pretty straight forward ..user friendly...running XP makes auto detection of camera + downloading files etc simple...

At the end of the day...for a price under $2000...you get a camera that feels like a pretty serious piece of gear..will enjoy giving it a good workout in the next few days:)

Hi All,

I just got back from shopping night at Parramatta. I was very surprised that Paxtons has it! The gentleman let me play with one for a while. In the 10mins I had it in my hand, my first impression is that although it feels weighty, the plastic makes it feel rather cheaply built, like the Canon A70. My only gripe about it is the battery cover feels insecure, if you press your palm onto it, it makes a creeky sound. Although the other parts of the body feel more secure, at least the battery cover is secure and well built.

Now.. Paxtons has a great offer. The salesman told me that they have a 45 day money back policy. The condition is that you have to bring it back in its original packaging and there are no dents or scatches on the camera and lens. Quite a good policy I think. The other good thing, is that they will double the warrantee on the camera. The final good thing is that they will match any genuine competitors price. So if Camerahouse is selling it for $1800, they will match it. Although their ticket price is $1999.

When I first played with the camera, autofocus tended to hunt on monotone colors even though the shop was well lit with flourescent lighting. This was with the standard 18-55mm lens at maxium zoom (55mm). However, the salesman change the lens to the 90-300mm USM lens as a test, with that lens, it snapped into focus easily every time even at maxium zoom equating to 480mm! Very strange indeed.

Im sure there are many people who are going to buy this baby. Im thinking of getting this camera.... as a backup body.

sigh.. my fiance is going to kill me when she finds out! :)

Soke to Camera Action (Camera House in Melbourne) this afternoon and after a bit of prodding they said Friday. Being somewhat vague when pressed for a time they just said "give us a ring sometime tomorrow afternoon".

Guess who's going to be on the phone to Camera Action at 12:05!

It's just getting too much.

Sorry.. what i meant to write about my gripe is not the battery cover but the memory card cover... apologies!
