Coventry’s (old) Cathedral, formally known as St. Michael’s Church, was bombed in the blitz back in 1940.

The first pic is of St. Michael’s tower (backlit) and the second of a bronze tombstone, whose right hand was blown off in the air raid and has subsequently been repaired.

Comments welcome.

That's one pretty mean silhouette.. in my opinion slightly overcooked..

I do like the Yeatman-Briggs pic, but you seem to be slightly off the horizontal.

Nice set of pics, Andy. I liked flipping through them a lot. They gave me a flashback on the past as I too went to the University of Warwick, but a long time ago (the year The Specials and The Selecter formed in the downtown pubs...). I had a GAF cam back then... It's been a while.

G'day Andy,

Our Town's sister city is Coventry. We had a Civic delegation visit there in August. The renowned Coventry hospitality was exhibited to our visitors who were very appreciative (if not overwhelmed!) by the good cheer and friendship received. I met the then Lord Mayor Sheila Collins when her delegation (including a complete soccer team!) visited here in 2001. Also previous Lord Mayor, Arthur Waugh. Any of these names ring a bell? Anyway, good to see photos of your wonderful city. I will pass the link on to our promotions people at Council.

If only I had my tripod, then I would of had a go at bracketted exposure and blending the images PSP.

I will try to straightening the image and re-posting to pbase.
Thanks for your constructive comments.

G'day to you too Les,

I didn't know that Coventry is the sister City to Parkes, named after the Sir Henry Parkes, who incidentally was born a stones throw from where I live. I was reading that they are to build a replica of his cottage in Australia.

As for Sheila Collins, her name was featured prominently when she was Mayoress of Coventry (last year I think).

Please do pass on the link to your people at the council, and if they can make use of the pics all the better.

The main reason for putting the Coventry Gallery together is to provide an insight into the changing faces of Coventry, when considering recent developments, for relatives who have left for Brisbane over 30 years ago.

Thanks again for your interest,

Andy

Thanks Andy,

I will advise the right people about the availability of your pics. When Sir Henry's replica cottage is completed (very shortly supposedly) I will post somes pics and get you to do the same of the original. We'll see if we got it right :-). Keep the pics of everyday life in Coventry coming.

Cheers,

Les.

Andy, go back and capture the top of the steaple in the first photo. The second is very nice.

Thanks Jeff,

Coventry Cathedral is well photographed site, and getting a different view point is a challenge in itself.

Just 4 Morris,

I've gone out, re-took the shot, and added on the top part of the spire!

Seriously, I preferred the composition of the clouds/sun and the depth of colour in the first shot.

See for yourself......

I think you still need a little more room on the top. Also if you could move to the right and block out the sun, that might look better. You might even get a glow on the edge of the building.

It's not in Coventry (it's actually Reykjavik..), but here's a shot I kinda like of a spire (I know it's different to what you're trying to achieve though Andy, but thought it might give you more ideas).

I should be up in Coventry fairly soon (I have family there), may join you and take some snaps of the cathederal..

Hi Alex,

I do like the perspective on the Reykjavik spire, I will certianly consider different compositions in the future - if only to see what works and what doesn't.

If you fo decide to visit Cov Cathedral, I found that Sunday Mornings/afternoons are pretty quiet times - otherwise its overrun by tourists!

Thanks again,

Andy
