I've just picked up the mighty 300d...just out here in Australia...battery is on the charger...the guy in the shop said 'leave battery on the charger for 15 hours for your first charge'

Needless to say I want to try it out NOW! :) (Instant gratification and all that)

The only thing I can find so far in manual refers to giving battery a full charge and then giving it an extra hour...

Do I need to keep this battery charging for 15 hours??? Will taking it off after 2 hours mean potential battery life is ruined?

After waiting so long for this camera to come out...I don't feel like staying up until 3am before I can use the thing!!!

Full charge in 90min.

I think you'll find somewhere in the information that came with the camera that the battery was partially charged in the factory, and "should have sufficient charge to check that everything works properly" or something like that.

To me this implies that you don't need to worry about the first charge being longer than usual - if this was necessary the factory would have had to do it. I charged mine to full plus one hour. It took a couple of hours in total - time to read the manual or have a bite to eat.

Mobile phones used to have similar things in their manuals. Charge for ... so long first charge. Many people took this as gospel for all batteries. Now that newer batteries are out the phones generally no longer have these guidelines. I'd use it once it was fully charged.
15 hours? Bad joke!

When I got the D60, I charged it for maybe 15 minutes and then went off shooting. The 15 hours business is bull. I would charge it for an hour or two, but you probably can do some shooting fresh out of the box for a few minutes at least.

Follow the directions of the manual! The engineers that designed and implemented the battery instructions are the ones to be trusted. There is a mindset from the old days when certain types of batteries had a "memory" that undercharging would doom them to short life. This is not the case with Lithium. So put it on the charger and let it run to 1 hour past the blinking light going out and you should be fine.

Happy charging,

Rob

I think the dealer was wrong but still doing you a favor--with 15 hours, you have time to read the manual cover to cover, go online to register the camera, and read the last couple weeks' posts on this forum. Then you turn on the camera and have an idea what to expect and what to do.

I that what I did? Heck no. I figured, "There must be some charge in the battery from the factory, so let's try it out." Then, when repeatedly pressing the "lightning bolt" button did not cycle through flash modes like I thought it would...THEN, I put the battery on the charger and opened the manual. THEN I registered the camera. THEN I started reading posts on this forum. And guess what? Fifteen hours later, I was ready to start taking pictures!

Thanks for the tips people!

I pulled it off the charger and have been happily trying the 300D

Canon 300Dee, Canon S4-0-0, Canon S9-0-0 Printer, Canon S4-0 (Wife), Sony NZ90 PDA w/ two meg camera (kid), Olympus C2-0-0-0 (Dog) - There.... a search friendly list of equipment.

The document that comes with it gives a 90-minute charge time. On the charger are three LEDs: they indicated how much the battery pack has been charged already... 50, 75, and 90 percent. A 50% charge takes almost no time at all. If you leave it on after the 90% for another half hour or less, you get 100%.

Heck, at 400 to 600 images per full charge (depending on flash, LCD playback, etc.) all I need is the original and one spare. And my spare is an Optex, which cost $35 less than the Canon version here in Canada.

The Manual state : 90min for a 90-100% and leave it 1 hours more (for 2h30) for a complete ChargeUp (100% max charge)

I always leave it for 2h30...
