Hello, I was wondering if you can see the live view on the D810 camera LCD screen while tethering to a computer using any software?

I've been told you cannot with the D800 and that you can with the D850, but haven't been able to find out about the D810.

Thank you.

if your tethering that means your lcd is being mirrored to computer, nikons transfer software allows you to still use on camera lcd but pictures won't show up in transfer immediately you will have to hit the refresh button. i haven't tried tethering with lightroom

Thank you... does anyone know if it works automatically with capture one or qdslrdashboard?

I want to use the camera LCD for focussing, have live view on a second monitor for when I'm moving lights, and then be able to review the picture on the screen straight after capture....

Surely it's possible...the cheap canon dslrs can do it :'(

It's the only thing holding me back from picking up a d810 to replace my Fuji x-e3.

As soon as you connect the D810 to a computer LV is disabled on the body (when body and computer is on).

Thank you for confirming... :(

Is there a simple workaround at all that isn't too costly? Perhaps a small monitor connected to the tripod with a feed from the PC that has the live view?

i tether my d800 to a 60 inch tv using an 8ft HDMI cable. Thats a cheap way. You will still have to use the TV as your live monitor tho. The pictures will pop up after you take it to view on the tv.

You can purchase an off camera monitor as well. not sure if your trying to direct save the images to your computer while doing so though?

If thats the case you will need to download nikon free software from their website.

its not going to work with capture on MAC.

Thanks, that's what I'm doing at the moment with a HDMI cable from my Fuji X-E3 but the image quality over the hdmi is absolutely terrible for reviewing the images (products) ... I was hoping a hdmi feed of the actual image file from the tethered computer to a half decent monitor would be better...but I really don't actually know.

My Fuji X-E3, which doesn't support wired tethering whatsoever, in low-power mode, still mirrors the LV with HDMI-out and doesn't turn off the camera lcd.

On canon you just press the LV button to turn it back on when tethering over usb...or anytime.

On the D810, can you switch between live view to the tethered device and live view to the camera LCD using a button on the camera, or on the computer?

im not sure, I don't have the d810. You can google tethering while using live view. Or how to tether the d810. Im pretty sure theres a lot of youtube videos on this

You would think so! I've been googling extensively...a few disappointed people mention the D800 but for some reason this isn't covered much.

It seems crazy to me how under-reported this is.

How would people shoot in a studio with a nikon while tethering. It's a pretty big limitation to not even be able to look at the camera. Manual focus, moving lights about...

I just bought a Nikon F to Canon EOS lens adaptor as a cheap solution for now -_- Might have to hold off on a nice new Nikon body for a little while.

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate the help.

That is not possible.

You can tether to a phone, tablet or computer and have the LV on that device, but not on the camera body while tethered.

I don´t understand why you would want to set focus via the body LV but not via the connected device, which works just as well. In fact, it is easier to use the device since you can more easily set the exact point to focus on (I´m referring to apps like Helicon Remote, qDSLR, Control my Nikon to name a few).

I don't know about LV on all the time but I tethered the camera via wired or wirelessly and was able to view images after taking them on the back LCD. First I tried qDSLDashboard but it didn't work. What works is the Nikon Control 2. But it isn't free. I have not tried anything else.

There is a program Smart Shooter that allows you to shoot tethered and see the image on your lcd. There is a trial version for you to download. I use it on a mac not sure about windows machines.

The connected device would be my PC, which isn't right in front of the product like the camera would be so it's much more convenient to have the Live view also on the camera. Otherwise, I would have to turn the focus ring...walk to the computer to look at the screen...walk back to the camera!

Not just for focus either but for moving the product very slightly - often the viewfinder is out of reach but the screen is visible.

Sometimes I need a monitor...sometimes the camera is more convenient. Really quite a big oversight imo.

But why do you need Live View? Why can't you use your camera like you normally use it?

The viewfinder you mean? It's not always accessible on a tripod. Also, it's much easier to focus using 5x-10x zoom with live view. It's more comfortable too, especially with the camera on a tripod.

I have D810 and I just checked. As soon as I stuck USB cable in, the LV turned off. I was able to use LV on my screen with NC2 though. I am using laptop tough so it is easy to be next to the camera.

I see, thank you! Which software is NC2? I can't seem to find what it stands for by googling.

Just to confirm, when you say you were able to use LV on your screen, do you mean the camera screen or the laptop screen?

Thanks again.

Do you know if you are able to see a live view on the LCD or is it only the captured image showing up on the LCD?

I don't have a D810 yet otherwise I would try out the trial. It's the one thing holding me back from purchasing one.

Thank you.

Nikon Camera Control V2.

On my laptop screen. Software has LV function.

I do not use live view for any shooting however in Smart Shooter 4 there is some kind of setting for live view. Yesterday I downloaded the newest version (4) and discovered a flaw with the program not recognizing the D500 and the D850. They are working on that bug right now. Also for what it's worth there is a Windows version. The D800E works very well but you need to set the software to write to both the computers hard drive and the cameras card to see the image appear on both.
