d-100 Vs 10D

Within the next two months I will be purchasing a digital SLR. At this point in time the choice seems to come down to the Nikon D-100 and the Canon EOS-10D, they seem to be comparable products in most specks.

I have owned one digital camera before, a Kodak DC-215 (waits for laughter to stop) and am currently using a N-80 with promaster lens and flash. I have been told that IF I get the D-100 I should buy Nikor products to use with it, so transferring the existing items from my N-80 is not something that needs to be taken into account.

There is one feature in specific that I like about the Nikon, i.e. the front and rear curtain options, but a friend who is a professional recommended the Canon over the Nikon. Any one who can offer assistance as to which would be the better system for an amateur with aspirations of more, would be appreciated.

... but you need to read up a lot more.Start by reading the reviews for both cameras on this forum. You can't go wrong with either, but do a lot more research first, and then choose the system, not the camera.

You need to go to this sites Nikon and Canon forums and read. You will find.

1. That the Canon vs Nikon is a religious question.
2. That the declared winner is the one with newest product.

3. That when you look at images taken from the two camps they are very close in quality and both very good.

My suggestion is to look at both companys with the idea you will be purchasing a system. Right now that might just be a camera body and one lens, but you will eventually buy stobes and other lenses, so look past just the body for cost and needs.

I own Nikon stuff and am very happy and know many that own Canon and are very happy. Typically the best photos on this site (and there are a bunch) result from a good photographer and not from superior equipment.

Clearly Canon has the technical lead (as of October '03), but it is problematic whether that lead translates either into better pictures, or an easier to use camera. So don't go spec happy.

Oh, one last consideration. You can't make a bad choice for two reasons. First the camera systems are both great. Second you can buy and sell on e-bay. Some folks on this site actually buy both systems, use them both for a month or two and sell the loser. This approach is not bad and the lose from purchase to sell over a month or so isn't any more then renting a camera.

My prediction is you will fall in love with one because of its functionality and ergodynamics. One will feal more "right" then the other. And of course only you can judge that, so you do need to get your hands on both cameras.
