Yes. Many people on this forum use C1 for Sony.

I started out with the basic free version but upgraded to the Pro version a couple of years ago. I still only use it as a tethering platform.

Thanks. Took me a while to figure out how to install, but that is the approach I am going to take. Start with Capture One Express for Sony. If I like working with it, $109 for Pro seems reasonable.

you are welcome.

Just an FYI - I believe I've read that they will be moving to a subscription model like Adobe has done. I don't know when.

Capture One is effectively a subscription model now. Each November (or early December) they come out with a new version and stop updating the old. So if you buy a new lens (i.e. new to market), you must upgrade. Plus they always introduce a new feature or two that you want

Capture One is simply wonderful, so I just budget to upgrade each year. I keep looking for alternatives like Dark Table, RawTherapee, abd the free Sony Imaging and ufraw programs. None are as powerful or easy to use as Capture One.

I have Capture One and Lightroom, but I hardly ever use Lightroom. I really was never into post-processing photographs until 4 or 5 years ago when I really got into Photography. I think if I had gotten into Photography 10 to 15 years ago I might had be a Lightroom person. I just personally find Capture One to be more intuitive than Lightroom when it comes to post-processing.

Same

YMMV on that one. Every time I've tried to use it I just get frustrated with C1's UI. That's the single thing that has been a non-starter for me, personally. We are all certainly different!

I downloaded the free version. It’s still in my computer but gets hardly any use. The UI is something I really don’t like and the results are, for me, not better than other programs. The price for the “professional “ versions is high when you compare it with Luminar, Affinity or Pixelmator. So for me it’s a no. But of course YMMV

I have been using C1 Pro for Sony since version 9. Works great for tethering and some manipulation. I would recommend the C1 Pro YouTube tutorials for all those frustrated by the UI. They really help explain their philosophy of image production and how to do things in C1Pro.

I however do most of my work in Lightroom even though I capture with C1 Pro for Sony. There are certain adjustments I can not seem to make in C1 Pro that I can in Lightroom.

Thanks, everyone. Getting ready to give it a go.
I you buy do it now in the moment there is a special spring offer with a 50% discount.

i use the program for some years after apple dropped aperture

C1 is a most excellent raw converter/PP program. IMHO, its DAM part is its weak point. For me the DAM is awkward and I kept making mistakes which finally made me switch to ACDSee Ultimate whose DAM is very good. But if the DAM is not important to you or you can make it work for you, C1 is one of the best programs out there.

Make sure you uninstall Lightroom to remove the temptation to go back and use the Lightroom setup in Capture One which mimics the setup of the Lightroom layout to make the conversion easier.

I made the switch a while back, haven't look back since, it's great

I sometimes use it but (for me at least) it’s not close to being a replacement for Lightroom and Photoshop

IMO, this would be a bad move for C1. Adobe has Photoshop available and tied to LR. C1 doesn’t have anything similar that I know of, and would require two subscriptions if one wanted to use both C1 and Photoshop. Eventually, my Photoshop CS6 will stop working and I’ll need to subscribe to get Photoshop. If I have to pay for a C1 subscription, I’ll be looking at LR as a possibility instead as I don’t want two subscriptions.
