well i've tried them all from 5d4 6d2 and eos-r. i'm sold on the eos r and mine should be coming in friday. the control ring is awesome. i was using my 6d in the cold and i realized no matter how nice a touch screen can't give up a dial... more dials... more better :) then add articulating screen when i'm doing astrophotography or sitting low shots.

i loved how the eos-r made my old 24-70, 85, 50, 100-400 all feel new and fast again. i love knowing what the colors and brightness was going to be before hitting the trigger.

now that being said i tried the ef-s kit lens today. OMG was i surprised when i saw how great the colors were and over sharpness.

I recently got a 28mm 1.8 as my street photography lens. I used to always carry the 40mm pancake. After using the EF-s today i was wondering maybe it's time to revisit ef-s and now go back and grab a couple.

So for every day use, on a full frame camera, what lens would you all think would be your favorite? i know bloggers like the 10-18, but i don't do much there. Too bad they don't make a good weather seal ef-s lens. I would love to have an wide prime/zoom that was weather seal.

Thanks,
Sid

The only reasons to use EF-S lenses on the R is during transition from APS-C or to reduce size and weight. The EF-S 1018 delivers nice results and is much lighter/smaller than the 1635/4. Same for the 55250. The most amazing results come from the 24/2.8 pancake. But it gives you 35mm - and unless you already own it, I'd rather spend my money on the RF35/1.8 which is outstanding.

man the only downside is the ef-s knocks it down to 11mp. if it wasn't for that i love how this eos r camera has breath live into all my older lens. the sharpness, dynamic color range is nothing short than amazing. i love the weight savings. i used to carry 40mm every where. now the 28mm is my goto.

The only lens worth carrying for the EOS R is the 10-18mm. 24mm? you got the RF 35. 28mm? you got the EF 40.

i don’t vlog not sure how useful 10-18 will be. I have the 40mm. Thought about getting the 24 pancake but knowing mp drops down to 11 has been a bummer.

The 35 2.8 compared to my 28 1.8 and my 40 2.8 and my 50 1.4 not sure is it worth getting

It's not just vlogging, if you don't make large prints, I had an 1100D which at 12mp APS-C was absolutely more than enough for large prints, social media, family trips, etc.

Having a 16-35mm lens at 299$ is a real feat, you have no other alternative besides paying a thousand bucks, just to get the extra MP.

Anyhow other glass it isn't worth it.

Sigma 18-35mm/1.8: Just get the 24-35/2
Sigma 50-100/1.8: get the 70-200/2.8
17-55/2.8: Get the 24-70/4
18-135mm: Just get the 24-105 STM.
55-250mm: Get the 70-200/4
24mm f2.8: Get the 35mm f/1.8 RF.
28mm f/1.8: Get the 40mm f/2.8 STM
35mm f/2.8: Just get the 50mm f/1.8 STM
Sigma's Crop 50mm f/1.4: Just get the 85mm f/1.8

There are no other Crop lenses, all the greats are FF: 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm, all the 200+, Zooms are covered by the 24-70/4, 24-105/STM, 70-200/4,

It's ONLY the UWA end that doesn't have a similarly priced alternative that covers FF.

The only crop-sensor lenses that I use on FF cameras are the 10-18mm for Canon, and a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX, and that's because it DOES cover FF sensors. I just made a thread about how great it works as cheap 35mm for FF users: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4376399

Sorry, what does this mean, mp drops to 11?
APS-C mode crops the 11mp center portion of the 30mp sensor. When you put on an EF-S lens, the camera uses an APS-C 11MP portion of the FF sensor.
So the EOS R automatically detects EF-S lenses and reduces the effective sensor size to stay within the reduced image circle? I had no idea. 11 Mp is more than enough resolution for all the typical print sizes. This might be one more reason for me to buy the R.

Thanks for the follow-up!

Yup. My 10-18mm made me not even think about a 16-35!

I do like the wide array of is cheap efs lens..... just wish it wasn’t already trimmed down. 20mp I could probably be ok...

You guys are just spoiled. I still shoot with a 5D, not much more than 11 mp using the entire sensor. Regardless of the body, cropping substantially creates many issues other than loss of resolution. For one thing, lens aberrations become larger. Then there's the loss of lens sharpness and the increase in motion blur. This is all very much variable, I know, and in some circumstances it might not be a problem. However, out of many thousands of frames shot, I can honestly say I've lost only a tiny fraction of a percent of images due to an inability to crop sufficiently in post. Anyway, thanks to everyone for comments on my question, it was very informative. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. :)

For me the weather resistance was a major factor, when I changed to the R from a crop, I sold every EF-S, crop lens I had. Now all my lenses are FF weather resistant but my 50 STM.

My favorite lens now is my RF 24-105 L, its a fantastic GP lens and the 16-35 f4 is also a fantastic lens :)

The 11.6 mp crop is not that bad, 18-35 A, Say hi to buddy :)

I guess you got lucky, or I got unlucky.

I bought an EOS 100D + EF-S 10-18 as a lightweight alternative to my 5D2 + EF 16-35/4. My 10-18 is junk by comparison, so much so that now my 'lightweight' option is the EF 16-35 on the 100D and I put up with the FL difference. If I really need the WA, I still lug the heavy combo.

What really grates me is, that I sent my brand new 10-18 to Canon not long after purchase because of the blurry corners and boarders. From what I have seen, it appears there are better examples than mine, but Canon promptly informed me that mine was "within spec".

I don't use it, and are reluctant to put it on the market because of its performance, and so would be wary of other used examples.

You seem to like your 10-18 so here is an example I have previously used as it is typical of the results I get. What do you think of the corners, particularly upper left? Remember Canon think this is OK. I can assure you, my EF 16-35 is on a completely different level.

Thanks.

The best UW zoom I ever used (on a crop) was the Canon 10-22mm. I suspect it's a better lens than the less expensive 10-18mm.

Someone asked about an "everyday" lens. For routine street photography, the lowly 28-135mm does a very credible job on FF. However, depending on the lay of the land, I often find it necessary to switch to the 17-40mm that has replaced my 10-22mm. I'd love to try the 10-22mm on the EOS R - so many interesting effects possible at those extremely wide angles!
