I have a question for anyone who's much smarter than me?

Is my Mac capable of running or recognizing Nikons, D7500 or D500,? I'm running LR6 [no upgrades to the LR6]

This is all I know about this computer, other than its about 6 or 8 yrs old?

OSX Yosemite version 10 10.5

processor 2.7 GHZ

mem 4gb 1333 hzddr3

I have no idea just what this is saying, I have no plans to purchase a new computer [money]

I'm retired, and limited funds, but I'd like to upgrade one more time a camera.

2nd question this has a 2.0 usb port, can i use a card reader for 3.0? Or can one be used a 3.0. Thinking of a D500 from my D7100, i do some limited sports. I can stay with a D7500, if my LR will recognize it.

Sorry to be so dumb, but I'm not a admirer of technology, still no cell phone.

Hope someone can answer these few questions.

I think so. It sounds like you need to update LR6 to LR6.14. You may also want to update Mac OS X from Yosetime to High Sierra, but that is a bigger undertaking for what will probably be a smaller reward.

DETAILS

For Photos and similar applications, the minimum OS that you need for D7500 and D500 RAW support is High Sierra. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade to High Sierra . I don't think you can upgrade to Mojave (which requires more recent hardware).

I don't own a smartphone, either (in all likelihood I never will).

What KIND of Mac do you have?
iMac?
MacBook?
Mac Mini?

If the RAM is upgradeable, you might consider upgrading to 8gb. Not expensive and can only be done on some Macs (but not on others).

Yes, you CAN use a USB3 card reader on a USB2 Mac. USB3 is "backward compatible". No problems there.

If you shoot your pics as jpegs, they should be readable on any Mac.

If you buy a new or relatively-recent camera, and shoot RAW, the older version of the OS and software may be "too old" to read the RAW files. I don't use RAW so I can't really comment further, others might.

For Lightroom 6, Adobe says you need Lightroom 6.5 or later for D500 RAW support and Lightroom 6.12 or later for D7500 RAW support. The final version of Lightroom 6 is 6.14; this is a free upgrade from earlier versions of LR6.

There should be no problem attaching USB 3.0 devices to a USB 2.0 port. I do that all the time. Note that you will only get USB 2.0 speeds.

Here are the specs for lightroom:

Since money is the main limitation, you have to increase your RAM to 8 GB. - 4 GB is not going to cut it and will cause problems. If you are able to do the RAM upgrade yourself, that would save you some dollars. Instruction of this can be found here: https://www.appledollars.com/ram-upgarde

I want to thank you folks for your comments. I'm not sure if I want to do the upgrades? I do shoot RAW, but I can continue the way I'm going.

I find as I get older, [73] I don't have all the fire to get out, now its more just enjoying shooting some photos. I've been the last several months spending more time with my film cameras, Nikon N80, and F100. I started photography in film in 80's and I'm winding down. I pulled them out of retirement, and reliving the "good ol days"

I kind of thought maybe I could make one more camera purchase, and finish up? My limited sports are BMX racing and H S soccer, I completed my last season of youth Basketball this past month.

I do thank you all so very much, I have a friend who helps me with any issues with the computer, she's going to photo my wife's and I 50th wedding party, later this month, and we'll talk about this.

I may look into a older D4 or D4s??
