Does new iMac use the same RAM?

As per the title of this thread. I want to order 32GB of third party (Crucial probably) RAM but want to make sure it is compatible with the new machine. Does anyone know if it is the same as the old RAM?

I think it depends on which one you're looking at. All but the lowest end seem to be using faster memory. The specs are: 2666MHz DDR4 memory

I think the previous was 2400mhz if memory serves me correctly.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I was looking at a top end 27 inch with fastest processor.

did you check the specs on Apples site? it lists the RAM it uses there.

I have but it only gives the following:

2666MHz DDR4 memory. SO-DIMM

In Apple's installation guide (which doesn't yet include the new iMac) it gives the following additional info for older models:
  • PC4-2400 (19200)
  • Unbuffered
  • Nonparity
  • 260-pin
  • 2400MHz DDR4 SDRAM
It doesn't therefore state whether it is unbuffered, nonparity or how many pins

if you put

2666MHz DDR4 memory. SO-DIMM

in www.macsales.com, or bhphoto.com, amazon.com you will get the correct memory.

Party memory on used in higher end servers

what does it matter if it's compatible with the NEW iMacs or not?

2017 iMac is the last iMac you can upgrade with 3 party ram

from there on out the Ram is soldered to the board you-- you have to order FROM APPLE when you first buy your iMac

you say they old mac installation guides lists all the specs
  • PC4-2400 (19200)
  • Unbuffered
  • Nonparity
  • 260-pin
  • 2400MHz DDR4 SDRAM
It doesn't therefore state whether it is unbuffered, nonparity or how many pins

but new memory specs are unknow?

This is all www.macsales.com lists for specs for memory for 2019 imac

Product Specs:
BUFFERED - A buffer is used to help the system control large amount of memory. Used to describe older technology modules such as EDO and SDRAM.

Parity Memory -for very high end servers

DDR3 or DDR4 SO-DIM contains 260 pin. Like a canon full frame Digital SLR has and EF mount..it just a spec..not like they make they with 240 or 290 pins

NO 2017 27 inch and 2019 27 inch use different RAM. its listed on apple site under tech specs

2019 27inch iMac has user up-gradable RAM

so its NOT soldered to the board

THE 21 inch model DOES NOT HAVE user upgradable RAM

(but it has not had a teardown yet so anything is possible)

Thanks for the additional info. I have searched on Amazon.co.uk using 32GB DDR4 SODIM 2666 260 as search terms and found a Crucial product matching that description. I am pretty confident that would work.

Here is the link to the Apple Tech Specs for the 2019 27 iMac. Under memory, it clearly states that the memory is user accessible (meaning it has a memory door like the previous 5K 27" iMacs)

I just ordered the newest 2019 , 27 inch iMac with 8 gigs of ram. The apple sales person told me it is user upgradable. I ordered more ram from other world computing.

This is upgrading my 2012 iMac

so If the apple sales rep lied to me I will just return the computer and go from there
