Sigma MC-11 with teleconverter

Hello,

I did some research on that topic but it seems like no one has tested it yet. I know that sigma says on their website, that it's not compatible with teleconverters but so they say about any other lenses than sigma. And since the AF performance of my 24-35mm Art is really bad while some canon lenses perform quite well, I don't really care about what sigma says officially.

So simple question, has anyone tried the MC-11 in combination with a canon or sigma teleconverter?

the reason I'm asking is, I'm searching for a useable 70-200 F2.8 plus 2x TC combo. The G-Master is, at least for me, not worth the price since I'm not a professional and I don't need that tiny bit of extra IQ over a Sigma or the good Tamron (if there is any, has yet to be tested)

And sure, a 70-200 AND a 150-600 would still be cheaper or the same price than the G-Master but who really wants to carry two of those big lenses around all the time. I think a 2X TC has proven to be a very good alternative.

Also, I have a LA-EA4 adapter that I barely use because I don't really like the fact of the mirror light loss (doesn't matter if its that big of a deal but you know it's there) and the few AF-Points. So an A-mount TC and an A Mount 70-200 would be an option too but if it's possible I would prefer the canon solution.

Hoping that's the right place to ask this question, I just created this account to ask it but I'm using the forum for a long time to read.

with best regards,

Marco

I just saw I didn't post this as a question.. is there a way to change it?

I was hoping to see a reply to your question.

Anyone??

hi,

I tried the following configuration:

a7r

canon 70-200 2.8 L (v1)

Canon extender ef 1.4 (v3)

Sigma Mc-11

It works, more or less. All my Canon lenses on the a7r and mc-11 focus painfully slowly (with or without extender). So, yes, the combo extender + telephoto "works".

I currently use the Sigma MC-11 with canon 85 1.8 and Canon 70-200 F4 L USM (non-is) and both focus really fast on my A7Rii. I was able to use the 70-200 for sports and had no problems. But I don't have any teleconverters, sorry.

I did some test but on Canon 200mm F2/L..

I am getting the Canon TC 2x III and will test the sigma MC-11, Since it works with Canon 1.4x TC II, I am hoping this will work with 2X crossing fingers.. If not I will return it..

It's not a big deal. I have the bits and pieces and made a trial.

No apparent loss on image quality and the focus seems quite fast actually given the Sony body is from 2011 (?) or so.

You can check the experiment here:

Good luck!!

Any updates on this topic?
I got sony A7m3 and MC-11 and canon 70-200 f2.8 and would like to purchase canon teleconverter 2x. Was wondering about the results people are getting with that combo, especially after the latest camera firmware update which alows for better focusing for canon lenses.

wondering the same. might just test for myself and return it if it's poo lol

I've just got the Sony A7 iii. I've already got the canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II and the Canon 2x extender iii. The MC-11 is on the way. Will update the thread this coming week once it's all here and tested.

I'd say that the performance would probably greatly depend on a camera. A7 is a pain to use with mc 11 and any canon glass I tried. I gotta try 70-200/4 +1.4x, but it is already really bad even without it. On anything moving it's a waste of time and otherwise I'd prefer manual focus anyway. LA-EA4 with Minolta lenses actually focused much better (on A7).

My guess is that the result may be much better with A7III, as the difference in AF while using Sony 50/1.8 was very noticeable.

I just tried my Canon 70-200 f4 L with a Tamron 1.4x converter and the MC-11 on the A7II. Works perfectly. Focuses just as fast as without the TC in both AFS and AFC. No more Image loss than normal with the TC.

Do you mean just as fast or just as slow?:) Could you please compare a7II +MC 11 to Canon cameras AF?

Focus is of course faster on the Canon (7D Mark II). Performance on the Sony is very lens dependent. For example the Canon 70-200mm f4 L focuses faster than the Sigma 100-400m. Although both are perfectly usable. I would rate both of those lenses with the MC-11 as very good.

See my Flickr album of a recent rodeo shoot. The camera used is in the titles so you can find the Sony shots easily. The Sony with the MC-11 did a fine job shooting rodeo level action.

I have the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 Sports with the Sigma TC-1401 and MC-11. That combination works like a charme on the A9, fast AF and great IQ. Same combination on the A7R ii is much slower and is hunting for focus in an indoor scenario in daylight it is quite fast and reliable, IQ is still verry good. I have not tested it with the Metabones V yet.

Was able to track this little guy and keep focus during lunch break using 2x and 70-200 with mc-11

Just received the MC-11 today. I updated it to the latest firmware which is version 1.16 released by Sigma on 03-14-2019. Using my Sony a7 III, I tested the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II. IS and Eye AF and all other AF is instant. No lag and also fine during single and high speed shooting. I also tested with the combination of the Canon Extender EF 2x III and Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II and again IS, Eye AF, and all other AF functions are working super fast in single shooting and high speed shooting. I'm going to try to test shooting some birds and my kids running around, but so far seems like it works very well. I already sold my Canon 5D IV, so I can't do a side by side, but the lenses seem as snappy as I remember them to be on that camera. I'll update if I find that it has some hiccups over the next few days.

For what it's worth, I also tested the following lenses which also worked fine in terms of IS, EYE-AF, and general (spot, zone, auto) AF while using single and high speed shooting:

Canon 16-35 f4L IS
Canon 24-105 f4L IS v1
Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS II USM
Canon 100mm macro f2.8L IS (macro close focus works very well and I had read elsewhere that it did not work, so maybe that's a lucky update with the new firmware as I know sigma does not design the firmware to work with canon brand lenses)
I only have one lens that the mc-11 did not like at all:

Canon 50mm f1.4 USM - With this lens the Sony a7 iii never fully turned on if that makes sense. It seemed like it half way booted up and I could see a very dim image but I couldn't manually focus or change any other settings etc.

I have one canon mount manual lens that also works well:

The Rokinon 14mm f2.8 works fine and is obviously full manual mode, but the camera and menu, etc. behave totally fine with it mounted to the mc-ll. You'll need to enable "Release without Lens" in the menu in order to use Zoom focusing.

I started to run through the same series of tests with my Sony a6000 and sigma mc-11, but it was really not going well with any of the lenses. I keep my kit small with that camera anyway, so I stopped trying.

Anyway, I'm pumped as I can use these nice canon lenses and don't feel like I'm in a hurry to sell them anymore! Hope this info is helpful!

You are writing "and all other AF functions are working super fast in single shooting and high speed shooting".

Dose this mean focus tracking is working with 10 fps with the A7III and the MC-11 and the Canon 70-200 2.8?

Here's a sequence of 15 shots with lock on af expand flexible spot. Low light and definitely not a scientific test, but the lock on af is definitely working at 10 fps.

I'm not so sure about this combo "working super fast". I do have A7m3, sigma mc-11 ( i think firmware v.1.14) canon 70-200 II IS 2.8 and Canon 2x III extender.
Here are my thoughts about it:
-in daylight its working just fine up to some point.
- It is definitely slower than without extender.
- it mainly works in the middle part of sensor so it wont focus or it will take ages to focus closer to the edges
- it is barely usable when the light is limited
- it's not very useful for fast-action photography

I'm only using this combo as I had 70-200 "leftover" from my canon-to-sony transition and I had a chance to grab extender for about 100£. But after playing with it for a while I moving towards idea of selling it and moving to any native lens.

I've been playing with the whole setup last night and this morning with all of my canon lenses, and I agree with the above. "Super Fast" might be a bit of an oversell, but I would still say that I'm finding it totally usable and plenty fast for me. I would not go shoot the olympics or a professional sports paid gig with this combo, but for an enthusiast (like me) I think it's totally legit. If you already own a bunch of canon glass, you can get the mc-11 for less than 200 bucks and try it out. Worth it IMO.

Sounds goood. Thanks for your test.
