Flash suggestions other than 550EX

Mike, do you have comparison shots? Drebel, kit lens with 420ex vs. Drebel, kit lense with Super 500?

Thanks
Jay
I paid about $180 (us) at B&H http://www.bhphotovieo.com . We bought a
Canon 420EX first, then read baout the Sigma Super 500, and
returned the Canon for the Sigma. The Sigma 500 is much more
feature rich than the 420EX, for about the same price. I beleive
it is also a more powerfull flash. The Sigma seems to be working
great with our D300.

I would like to know why you would pick the 420 over the Super 500.

Thanks
Jay
I am wanting a flash to help with indoor shots. From reading some
of the other threads I have noticed the 550EX works great. But it
is more money than I want to spend.

I can get not too bad indoor shots after PS processing. Having
said that, will it be worth my while buying the 420EX? I
understand that I will still need to do some PS processing.

Or is there another recommended flash?

Or should just keep on using the kit flash?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Jay

Has anyone taken some pictures with the 380EX yet. I have that flash for some years now and was planning to use it for a longer while. If it doen't do a good job on the 300D I'll seriously consider to cancel my reservation fot the 300D. I cross my fingers.

Nothing that would make a good comparison. We didn't take a lot of shots with the 420EX. The Sigma just seemed like such a good deal, with it being so close to the 550EX. I figured why not go for the better "bang for the buck" of the Sigma. I did play with the FEC on the Sigma last night, that seems to work well.

I found the Sigma Super 500 DG for $166 at Delta International...it's an import though.

I've never bought from them so as usual check them out before you buy!

I've had the 380EX for a number of years, and have never found it to be that much better than the Elan IIe's on-camera flash. It works about as well on the 300D, so if you like what it does on your film camera, you probably won't be disappointed with its performance on the 300D. I've been tempted in the past to trade it in on the 420EX, but if I were to trade it now it would be on the 550EX. If you have a fast lens (e.g., the 50 mm f/1.8), you may find that the 300D's relatively noise-free ISO allows you to shoot more with available light--which is my preference.

The Sigma Super 500 aslo has a "wide angle" screen thingy that you pull out from the top of the flash lense, and then it flips down over the flash lense. It's like an extra flash lense, just basically a piec eof plastic, with some kind of pattern cut into the back. In playing with it, it made the flash a ton brighter on close up shots, way too bright, like made my wife sitting across the table almost all white. I think it is for group shots, not close ups. Seems like it might be very usefull though. I'm sure someone else can give a better explanation of this. I plan on playing with it more this weekend.

HELP

I got a second hand 380ex with no instruction booklet. There is a switch on it where one position is a green dot and the other a flash/lightning bolt icon -- what does this do? I have no idea.

Also, with the kit lens, it zooms according to the actual focal length of the lens, when I would think it should be in the "50" position when the lens is at 28 mm. Shouldn't Canon get us a firmware update which makes the camera communicate focal lengths to the flash in a manner which takes into account the 1.6X conversion factor?

The green dot is for normal use (= 1 flash), the flash/lightning bolt icon I have never used beause I had no Camera that supported that function (EOS 600 = EOS RT) but I guess is't for rapidly flashing for higher shutterspeeds. I have to check the booklet if I can find it after many years.

About zooms according to the actual focal, I agree that they could have made an effort to correctly communicate focal lengths to the flash. Now is our 380EX is degraded to a lower number (mayby 300). On the other hand, we won't have problems with darker corners.

I still haven't got my 300D (deliverd 15 oct) and I can't wait to make my first pictures.
