I’m not going to bother upgrading until my cameras die.

I can definitely relate.

I bought EOS R and it was a side step for my 5D IV. I realize if a camera isn't a significant upgrade, why bother upgrading it other than GAS.

Despite that, I would still upgrade my 5D IV if a camera has significant upgrades.

I can probably sell 5D IV for decent price nowadays and the differences to upgrade isn't that much. Plus, the cost can be tax deductible.

Beside, if you have the money, why not. I know plenty of people died rich who is too afraid to live life - eat, travel, buy stuff they want. I also work in a hospital to see so many people die young too.

I only have 1 5D IV and I need a backup/upgrade for wedding.

With the rumor of 100 mpx IBIS camera, it doesn't appeal to me. I think 100 mpx is easier for Canon to achieve than mid mpx with great AF and FPS.

If the EOS R is $2300, I don't think the Pro 5DSR mirrorless will be cheap either.

I got some money to burn this year so I don't know if I want to wait for Canon 2020.

I waited for a long time for EOS R only to follow up with EOS RP. They are good camera, but just not what I am looking for.

Just shot a concert tonight with the 5d classic at high iso and f2.8 and am amazed at what it produced for such an old, hoary camera.

Same with my Canon 6D. I can produce the same quality as my Canon 5DIV. Most of the magic is done post processing, lighting, posing.

The only reason I am upgrading is I have some extra money around and I need a backup camera for wedding so why not.

i retired a few years ago and have decided to sell my two crop cameras and one full frame and L lenses but keep my old 20D with an equally old Canon EF 28-105mm and 50mm f1.8 mk 1 for snapping.

What works works. 20d can be had for 50 bucks now. But great old school mag body not that cheap plastic.

I stopped by the camera store today on my way back from work and tried a Sony a73 a Canon 6D Mark II and a Canon 5D Mark 4.

strangely enough my favorite among the three was not the new stuff but actually the Canon 5D Mark 4. It was just very snappy no-nonsense and worked.

If Canon can make an R thathasthe responsiveness of the 5D Canon Mark 4 then that's what I would want.

I am now settled with my lens selection in that I have a trinity of zoom L lenses and a few primes. My bodies (6DII and 1Dmkiv) complement each other well for different tasks. I use a small selection of m4/3 gear for travel and more casual shooting so I am quite used to mirrorless and the supposed advantages. Sure the EVF and IBIS work well, but they are not quite as life altering as a lot of people on the internet would have us believe.

The canon mirrorless offerings don't tempt me at all. I need versatility and speed and solid C-AF a lot. If I was to go mirrorless then I would need to see a lot of real world feedback from wildlife professionals. I just haven't seen that really. Hardly surprising with the frame rate... My 1div is almost welded to my 100-400ii and I often use it as a scope rather than lugging a pair of binos. Can't do that with mirrorless without a LOT of batteries. While the R glass looks amazing no doubt, the bottom line is that for me the sheer expense of system switching is just too high no matter what. I have spent the last 9 years building my kit and I am in no hurry to start again.

Living in the African bush for my whole working life I actually am a fan of old, proven technology. My Landcruiser is a straight six mechanically injected diesel with wind up windows. They still sell them like that if you want! Why? Because it is proven technology that has been developed over decades.

I dropped an olympus em10 from table height onto soft ground and the shutter was destroyed. Not great. My 1Div would have laughed at such an impact. It's hardly conclusive, but in my years of owning a 400D, a 40D, a 7D, a 1DIV and a 6Dii I have never had a failure that stopped me taking an image. I don't baby gear. My gear often lies on the floor of a boat or vehicle. It gets wet and is subject to intense humidity in the rains. Heat and dust in the dry season... etc etc.

I am not at all "anti" technology but for me I need to see a few more evolutions and confirmations that the system is for me and my personal uses. Basically a 1DX level camera (i.e. with the specs and battery life of the current mkii) with a higher MP count (30 mp would be enough!) but equal or better low light ability and a few more video features would be my dream camera.

I suspect that Canon have thought very long and very hard about their future. The R was to grab the gear head market who would buy just about anything. The RP is to get people into the ecosystem. A gateway drug if you like. Its gripping stuff all the changes in the camera world at the moment. I just hope that they really innovate again as they seem to have been in a bit of a rut for the last few years. I am not one to think that a Sony would do anything better for me, but I just can't help but be a bit saddened that their bottom tier full frame is so heavily spec laden compared to Canon's. It didn't stop me buying a 6Dii, but it is a little bit annoying.

Picture below just to liven up this pointless reply!

You should get a good pair of 7x42 binoculars like Swarovskis. You will prefer them to your eyeballs and they will be a lot lighter than a 5D4 and the 100-400. Of course, you won't be able to take photos with them.

I’m with you.

Reliabilty is my first priority. What’s the point of the latest and greatest if it has the potential to fail with heavy use.

I have a pair of 10x42s, but if the camera is already in my hand or next to me sometimes its just faster/easier to look through the viewfinder. Of course if I am birding or watching something "serious" then the binos come out...
