Does anyone have any experience with this combination? While I expect a Z mount native version will be released in the coming year or so, I have a bit of a need based on travel (non-professional photographer here) for a longer lens soon. The upside for me is that the F mount will also do well in double duty on my d7500. However, I am wondering about the general experience with the FTZ adapter: How is the picture quality? Any serious issues with indoor/low-ish light photography? How are the ergonomics? Anything I should think about in particular?

Also: while I would love to wait for it, i know that the F2.8 S lens will be out of my price range and as a non-professional is not something I truly have a need for (even if I have a general want for it).

Thanks in advance.

This thread is a month old but I finally got to this Z6 + 70-200/4.0.

I see Nikon has the 70-200/2.8 S on its roadmap but based on my own experiences with the AFS 70-200/2.8 and 70-200/4.0, I tend to go for the F:4.0 version more often, mainly due to the smaller size, and the IQ of the slower version is more than sufficient for me. I would love to see a 70-200/4.0 S for the Z mount that would make the lens light and small for the Z but for now I guess we just have to live with what we have.

I finally took some time to test out the 70-200/4.0 with my Z6. The day was misty and wet and the light was not bad but definitely not ideal. I had my Z6 in Aperture mode, Auto ISO to 25600 as I took my camera out and played with the combo for a good hour. 90% of the shots I made were wide open at F:4.0. The results are more than satisfactory for what I need in a 70-200mm. A few shots here just as examples:

Started shooting digital back with the first 2MP cameras. Over 20 cameras later still going. I shoot family and people portraits, weddings, Sports and a little of everything.

I had the chance to play with it a little this weekend. It was great. The one I used was a bit noisy when focusing and didn’t have the smooth feel of the 2.8. Is that normal, or was it just in the copy that I was using? Noise and feel are really secondary to image quality, but they are something my brain still considers as a factor for possible video use.

EDIT: Ignore me I was certain the lens was in AF-S. Nope. Af-C, so it “ wouldn’t focus” because it was always focusing

Following up here a few months later: I have some trips coming up and so pulled the trigger. Early test shots look phenomenal! One question for you: I am finding that it never actually achieves a true focus lock. The lens and focus motir sort of shudders in place once it comes into focus and the focus indicator in the EVF never turns green. I am back button focusing, and I find that the focus is plenty sharp, but it is a bit worrying that it doesn’t ever actually reach true focus lock. Is this your experience with the lens as well? Thanks for your thoughts!

Picked up the 70-200 f4 nikon for my Z7, and though it is perfectly sized for the mirrorless camera, I was underwhelmed by its autofocus performance compared to my other adapted lenses (and native S lenses). It's not the fastest focusing lens on a Z body (very fast on my D850), and I found it's not as sharp as the amazing 70-200 f2.8E.

Sold on my F-mount nikon 70-200 f4, and eagerly awaiting a Z-mount version...

works very good ... perfect IQ

good AF speed

The lens micro-adjusts a bit more than most, in my experience. Make sure you test the lens/ body combo on a superb high-contrast target and use a tripod (to take out user influence). I use BBF with AF-C: At close distance handheld, there's almost always enough human fore/aft movement to cause the lens to adjust AF. Also, with the Z6 and AF-C, the square never turns green. It only turns green with AF-S.

I've had this lens for years and use it often with my Z6 where the results the AF and optical performance is as good as on a dslr and gives me no issues at all. I have not tried this combo for any type of sports AFC tracking situations as I use it with my d500 for those situations. So it is possible that it is not as effective on the adapter for AFC shooting.
