Flash Batteries: Eneloop Pros not fitting in flash head

Good morning all! I am preparing for a trip to Costa Rica, so I am trying to get my camera and gear in top working condition. I researched the best batteries for speedlight flashes, and I was recommended Eneloop Pro batteries for my Nikon SB900 flash. I soon realized that these AA batteries are slightly bigger than normal AAs, and only three AA batteries can fit in the flash at once. Has anyone else had the problem of Eneloop Pro AA batteries not fitting in flashes? Are there similar AA batteries that perform just as well and fit better?

Many thanks,

Gareth

I've never had that experience with Eneloop Pro batteries in any of the Canon, Nikon and Godex flash units that I've owned. I've also checked the diameter of my Eneloops against other brands - the Ansmann and Energizer rechargeables are identical; the PowerEx rechargeables and regular Duracell alkaline batteries are smaller in diameter but only by the thickness of a couple of sheets of paper. I wonder if the Eneloops you received are genuine? I would return them if you can. I tend to prefer PowerEx rechargeables - well made, consistent power characteristics and a bit more powerful than the Eneloops, but they don't hold a longterm charge in storage.

Likewise, never had an issue with Eneloop batteries. They are the only AA or AAA batteries I have used for the last 5 or 6 years in anything (flash, recorders, clocks, my automatic trash can, etc).

I too have never had a problem with any of my Eneloops (or my Amazon clones), but the OP is using the "Pro" versions which I hear are a bit different. Maybe that is the problem.

Hi,

So you guys are saying that the eneloop pro battery are good for nikon SB-800, no size difference? I like the capacity and looking for similar types.

I have used eneloop pros in my Nikon Speedlights and other battery operated stuff. I have a few speedlights. SB-400, 500, 600, 800, and SB-N7. All take them just fine and meet expectations.

I use the same batteries in my SB-700 speedlight with no issues.

It shouldn't matter. AA is a standardized battery size, so if you buy a battery that's labeled & sold as "AA" it should fit in a any device that's designed for AA. I've never heard of this with any other NiMH AA battery so I also wonder if they might not be genuine.

All AA batteries are supposed to be the same size but they actually can differ slightly unfortunately, as do the compartments/cases they fit into. It's not uncommon for some batteries to fit tighter than others.

I've heard of 3rd party Li-ion batteries not fitting properly, so I'm wondering if these are not legit Eneloop Pros. First time I've heard of that issue with those batteries.

It's common with Li-Ion batteries because some have protection circuitry built into the ends, making them slightly longer than those without. With typical AA, the size can vary due to poor manufacturing standards or the attempt to squeeze a little more mAhs out of them, making them slightly thicker.

That’s true, the protected and unprotected versions of 18650 cells often don’t play nicely but you have other things to worry about there as you need to be sure you match them up with the kit using them. Need to be a little more savvy than using AAs!

However, the lithium primary cell AAs (not rechargeable) can be very sweet batteries when you really need good life. But the Eneloops / Amazon badged versions are great for sustained use.

Agreed with the lithium AAs, I have those in a handful of devices. I've also been very happy with the Amazon Eneloop clones.

Yes, work for me I’m mine (and everything else for that matter). No issues.

However, the Amazon Basics high capacity are the same and just as good. But cheaper.
Yes, I saw the higher capacity ones. Hoping to get some of those soon.
