Dear all,

I‘m contemplating getting the Rx1r ii and was searching on various sites in Europe (including amazon.de) for current prices. Strangely enough, there are no Rx1r ii to buy, only the old Rx1r at over 3000€.

Is the Rx1r ii already discontinued?

Wex (UK) have them, or so they say

Although the value on the free options means you wouldn't be buying them...
"Free Optical Viewfinder, Jacket Case and Lens Hood worth £722 included"

Could a III be in the offing?

That’s very interesting, thanks for the link. I’ll observe what will gappen the next few days/weeks and maybe pull the trigger. I guess until Brexit actually happens, I can order easily from the UK as well. ;)

PS: I‘d love for a mark 3 to come out, as I‘ll be able to pick up a mark 2 even cheaper, unless they stop to sell it, which I was afraid already happened with amazon.de

On average.....how many images do you shoot in a week?

Hmmm, hard to say, there are weeks with none and then there are weeks with 500 or more. It strongly depends on how much time work and family leave for photography.

But taking my Lightroom catalogue and the image counts of the cameras I used, it seems I‘ve taken slightly over 20000 images the last ten years, which would mean an average of about 40 images a week.

Why do you ask?

Okay. If you wait weeks to make a decision you could miss 80 to 100 images of things you may never see or will never happen again. Go for it. There probably won’t be a Model III anytime soon if at all.

He already owns some good cameras so he won't miss a single shot.

Although I think it should be compared with the A7rIII with the 28mm f2, which is a somewhat larger unit (or the smaller 35/2.8), but you get IBIS, EVF, 4k video and other goodies for (in the U.K.) about £50 more before even looking for a discount.

If a III comes along (and it's been rumoured since 2017 so who knows, could be next month, 2020 or never) you might gain some features, but maybe no room for IBIS.

From https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sony-FE-28mm-f-2-Lens.aspx :

"Mounted on a Sony a7R III with Steady Shot enabled, I was able to handhold this lens with a nearly perfect sharpness rate at 1/5 second exposures. Combine an f/2 aperture with a 1/5 second exposure and this lens is ready for very dark conditions. About 50% of my 1/4 second exposures were sharp. At longer exposures, the sharpness rate dropped significantly through 1/3 second, but I have very sharp images captured at exposures as long .8 seconds."

That is very true (although at any given point in time I only owned a single camera ;) )

From the point of usability, my current set-up, which is a Fuji X-T20 with the 23/f2 lens is probably better than the Rx1r ii, however, I do yearn for that 35/f2 Zeiss/Sony lens with the FF sensor. In terms of IQ and rendering the Fuji can’t hold a candle to the Rx1r ii, imho.

I fully admit that me thinking about getting the Sony is an unnecessary, high-level luxury problem.

Thanks for your reply. I was considering a similar set-up, but decided that portability and size are crucial features for me here. I don’t have the need to swap lenses, as I have the Fuji system for this. It is small, light, and has very good lenses at a reasonable price to cover me for travel and family photography.

My true passion in photography, however, is street photography, where I found that 35mm suits me best. Therefore, the less professional a camera looks and the smaller a camera is (without compromising on IQ) the better.

Also, I‘ve read almost all reviews on philipreeve and similar sites, and it seems there is no lens that can match the 35/f2 of the Rx1 series in overall IQ, especially the smooth rendering of the background.

If there was a sinilar 35/f2 for the A7-series, I might consider going that route, but at the moment there is none...

Ahh, I see your point and I like where you are going! ;)

Although my heart might agree, my head, and especially my wife might not, as I do have a nice and very capable camera already.

It‘s just that this 35/f2 Sony/Zeiss lens is so tempting...

Shoot the 28/2 and crop a little? ;-)
(I suggested the 28 over the 35 as it's cheap and has a reputation for good bokeh.)

Oh and it's fine, I perfectly understand your decision, I was just pointing out another option in case it grabbed you...

Sample variation looks a bit scary on the RX1R II though, so probably worth buying from someone reputable (I think Wex are okay in my experience BTW):

Which is an excellent point! A wrote a screed about selecting a camera a while back, and I included a paragraph on the emotional connection you feel to it, saying (something like) you might end up better off with a camera that's 90% of what you want technically but you love using, rather than one that's 97% and does nothing for you...

I have a pretty full Fuji system, too, and the RX1RM2 is great for taking out as an all-purpose street camera. 35mm was my sweet spot on film, too.

Thanks for chiming in. May I ask which Fuji system you have abd how the AF speed of the Sony compares to it? On the web, there are mixed statements, ranging from rather slow to absolutely sufficient.

Thank you all again very much for sharing your thoughts and opinions, I highly appreciate it.

I‘d like to follow up with another question: How would you rate the battery life? I usually have my cameras set up to never go into stand-by mode so I can react fast when something interesting happens in front of the lens. In a hypothetical scenario in which I take 5 shots every ten minutes, how long do you reckon will the battery last? (LCD only, without reviewing the photos) 100 shots, 200 shots, only 50?
