Hi everyone, so I've been reading reviews here on the G85 and the GX9, and I'd like to know more about the crop factor on both cameras in 4K.

In the GX9 review it mentioned that "capturing video in 4K comes with a ~1.25x crop" meaning that "a 24mm equivalent lens turns into a 30mm".

However, in the G85 review, the crop factor was not mentioned. I searched in forums and saw some people mentioned that the crop factor is 2.2? Meaning that a 24mm equivalent lens turns into a 52.8mm?

I'm confused and also appalled by the huge crop factor on the G85 (not sure if true). I'm also unsure if there was any firmware updates that reduced the crop factor.

Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks a lot!

I believe the crop factor on the G85 and GX85 for 4K is about 1.1, rather less than the 1.25 on the GX9.

The 2.2 you saw quoted, includes the 2x crop compared to FF (which is rather silly).

This is a bit confusing because the 2.2x referred to includes the full frame crop diagonal crop factor of 2x.

When talking about 1.25x crop for GX9, that refers to only the horizontal crop from 16:9 video (not talking about diagonal crop of 4:3 frame in stills). The equivalent number for G85 is 1.1x.

Cameralabs consistently tests for 4K crop in their reviews. Here is the GX9:

Thanks for the detailed response! Seems funny that the newer GX9 has a larger crop 4K then the older GX85 and G85.

It's a side effect of the 20MP sensor. There are more pixels and with the same processing pipeline, it would require more of a crop. It also likely uses the slower IMX269 sensor (likely in GX8 also) which probably can't output 4K30p with less of a crop. The GH5 uses the IMX272 which is faster (can do cropless 4K).

One of the only major negatives of the GX9 vs GX85.
