Chinese Scientist Charged With Stealing More Than $1 Billion in Trade Secrets From US Petroleum Company

A Chinese national has been charged with stealing trade secrets from a U.S. petroleum company, with the intention of benefiting a Chinese company that had offered him a new job.
Federal prosecutors allege that Tan Hongjin, 35, a U.S. permanent resident, downloaded hundreds of confidential files about cell phone and lithium-based battery systems from his employer, an unidentified petroleum company “with significant operations in Oklahoma,” according to a Dec. 21 press release by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The value of a product connected to the unspecified trade secrets Tan is claimed to have stolen is estimated at about $1.4 billion to 1.8 billion, according to an affidavit filed by the FBI.
A search of his Linkedin account reveals that Tan worked as a staff scientist at a Phillips 66 research facility in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, since May 2017. Phillips 66, a U.S. multinational energy company, was ranked No. 28 on the Fortune 500 list for 2018.

Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou’s arrest in Vancouver on Dec. 6 led to immediate blowback.
Furious Chinese Communists have begun arresting innocent Canadians in retaliation. So far, three of these “revenge hostages” have been taken and are being held in secret jails on vague charges. Beijing hints that the hostage count may grow if Meng is not freed and fast.
Even for a thuggish regime like China’s, this kind of action is almost unprecedented.
So who is Meng Wanzhou?
It turns out that “Princess” Meng, as she is called, is Communist royalty. Her grandfather was a close comrade of Chairman Mao during the Chinese Civil War, who went on to become vice governor of China’s largest province.
She is also the daughter of Huawei’s Founder and Chairman, Ren Zhengfei. Daddy is grooming her to succeed him when he retires.
In other words, Meng is the heiress apparent of China’s largest and most advanced hi-tech company, and one which plays a key role in China’s grand strategy of global domination.
Huawei is a leader in 5G technology and, earlier this year, surpassed Apple to become the second largest smartphone maker in the world behind Samsung.
But Huawei is much more than an innocent manufacturer of smartphones.
It is a spy agency of the Chinese Communist Party.
And since there is ample proof the Chinese companies with the help of their government have been stealing the U.S. blind for years, it seems that it's time to send them a message. The cowards (and paid-off shills?) in the U.S. Senate and Congress "oppose" tariffs and sanctions, which is expected, after having basically sold the U.S. to China in the 1990s with rotten trade agreements.

That's just one example. Everyone is well-aware of this kind of thing because it happens often, since it's state-sponsored. Interestingly, there seems to be way more animosity (liberal press, Hollywood) against Russia for their meddling. Could be that certain people and companies make a LOT of money off their relationships with China.

Update: Germans are likely to do the same and Canada is thinking about it. Unfortunately, 1/2 of Toronto's internet infrastructure is Wuawei.

The UK is smart enough to have the Chinese involved in constructing their latest nuclear power plant.

Basically UK politicians are mainly thick and stupid as is most of the population (Brexit).

Isn't Germany using TETRA (Alcatel+Motorola+EADS+some others) for emergency services?

Better to be completely under the thumb of EU potentates who will use your country as a piggy-bank and a dumping ground for illegal aliens. Germany can't do it all by itself. :-)

It hasn't been removed yet. They said they'll kick out both the 3G and 4G in the next 2 years. That's is around 2021.

Looks like these guys know something about huawei and their tight connection with the communist government.
They didn't know something, but were told something and "advised" to abandon Huawei, ironically, by the US government, who has more than their fair share of spying. Does Snowden ring a bell?

The US government must be finding it getting harder and harder to spy on other countries if they use more and more Huawei products in their communication infrastructure in place of, say, Sisco's.

I wish Huawei would produce and start marketing in the West an Android cell-phove device where the operating system talks to their servers instead of Google's. Given Sonowden's revelations, and having a choice, I would much prefer being spied upon by the Chinese than by the US.

Just saying...

As stated, Canada detained Meng because of a request for extradition from the US, which is still pending.

Another quote from this article is as follows:

"Huawei is a leader in 5G technology and, earlier this year, surpassed Apple to become the second-largest smartphone maker in the world behind Samsung.

But Huawei is much more than an innocent manufacturer of smartphones.

It is a spy agency of the Chinese Communist Party.

How do we know?

Because the party has repeatedly said so.

First in 2015 and then again in June 2017, the party declared that all Chinese companies must collaborate in gathering intelligence.

“All organizations and citizens,” reads Article 7 of China’s National Intelligence Law, “must support, assist with, and collaborate in national intelligence work, and guard the national intelligence work secrets they are privy to.”

All Chinese companies, whether they are private or owned by the state, are now part and parcel of the party’s massive overseas espionage campaign.

Huawei is a key part of this aggressive effort to spy on the rest of the world. The company’s smartphones, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray, can be used to “maliciously modify or steal information,” as well as “conduct undetected espionage.” Earlier this year the Pentagon banned the devices from all US military bases worldwide.

But Huawei, which has been specially designated as a “national champion,” has an even more important assignment from the Communist Party than simply listening in on phone conversations.

As a global leader in 5G technology, it has been tasked with installing 5G “fiber to the phone” networks in countries around the world.

In fact, “Made in China 2025” — the party’s aggressive plan to dominate the cutting-edge technologies of the 21st century — singles out Huawei as the key to achieving global 5G dominance.

Any network system installed by a company working hand-in-glove with China’s intelligence services raises the danger of not only cyber espionage, but also cyber-enabled technology theft.

And the danger doesn’t stop there.

The new superfast 5G networks, which are 100 times faster than 4G, will literally run the world of the future. Everything from smartphones to smart cities, from self-driving vehicles to, yes, even weapons systems, will be under their control.

In other words, whoever controls the 5G networks will control the world — or at least large parts of it."

So, it seems appropriate for the US to request the extradition. But why hasn't this been followed up? Here's a clue: "On Friday, a spokesperson for Canada's Justice Department said the U.S. had yet to file the required paperwork in the Meng case and stated the Americans have until Jan. 30 to do so. If the U.S. misses the deadline, lawyers with expertise in extradition cases say the door could open for Meng's eventual release."

Also to consider is the dangerousness of 5G technology to human health. I have endeavored to outline this here:

Does the US want their 'enemy' China to proliferate a dangerous new technology onto their hemisphere?

Is there a difference?

Has an actual security threat been identified? Or is it just nationalistic/racist hysteria?

Good luck finding a cell phone made in Britain...
Yes. Numerous bodies have cited them as a security threat.

Your link functions as a example of "Security Threat" hysteria, the same paranoia and 'concerns' repeated over and over with no actual examples of security threats.

It’s like the Cold War, only now we’re meant to be afraid of everything Chinese instead of everything Russian....

However, for all this concern, no evidence has ever materialized publicly beyond very general, very vague “security risks.”
Yes, brush off hundreds of reports from respected bodies as "paranoia."

Chinese intellectual theft and spying makes Russia's pale by comparison. Russians spent their time spamming social media. Chinese have stolen everything they can, and have obviously made plans to further facilitate this by taking over large portions of the telco infrastructure. Meanwhile, you watch movies, or TV, nothing but Russian villains! Because Hollywood makes TOO MUCH MONEY from China!!!
None of the "respected bodies" have provided evidence of security threats, just vague warnings that have been repeated over and over by the media and tossed about on forums as if they were proven facts.

I don't deny the possibility and understand the reasons for concern. But do you know of any actual security threats? That's what I'm asking.
The fact they are controlled by the Chinese government, which steals and spies on Western countries already, that have their systems running in those countries, which can afford them access means it is an existing security threat. Or, we could wait until it's too late to do anything about it.

I am sure if any of those stolen tech are used in stuff sold outside of China, there will be lawyers lining up to sue the pants off of Huawei or any of the Chinese companies that uses those stolen tech. But yet ...

Maybe the money is not attractive enough. Not.

Yeah, me. I've taken a 75% pay cut since then.

Our town hasn't had a new company move in, a real company that pays decent and actually hires people, in 30 years.
Unfortunately, this is a world-wide thing. In 20 years, 95% of people will live in large cities and all the jobs will be there.
The world as we know it is disintegrating. And the growing disaster of Climate Change is so obvious to everyone except blinkered nationalists.

Who, when and why changed the growing disaster from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change"?
Scientists have always used the term Climate Change andaot isipopularly iseduon the UK.

GlobalGlobal is thetpopular term used in the UK. Although slightly different in meaning, the terms are used interchangeably.

Thanks 😊
