Please help. I was shooting fine and all of a sudden 1) shutter failed. 2) powered off and on and shots remaining number disappeared from LCD. 3) Shutter worked, but nothing is writing to disk and there is no LCD display at all. 4) PRessed reset button. date/time indicator started flashing, but still no LCD. 5) pressed reset again, lost all display on camera top. 6) After a couple of minutes it came back again but without picture counter.

Any clues. Camera is just over 1 year old and has been working just fine.

I switched CF cards, as well, from 512 Lexar WA to my usual IBM 1 GB.

It has been very humid lately, does that have anything to do with anything? Camera has not been exposed to rain or direct moisture, however.

HELP!!!

Do you have fresh batteries in the camera?

if you do, keep the camera in your fridge for an hour and then try.

One thing to try is to take the battery out and leave it out for several minutes and then replace it in the camera. Be sure the battery has a charge left to it. Let us know how you do.

Tom

Thanks. Yes, I have fresh batteries--a new charge. Keep the battery in the camera and in the fridge for an hour?

I take it this has happened to you?

Thanks for making this suggestion. Will try.

Thanks, I will try this before "heading to the fridge"!!!

Have you had a similar experience?

Rob,

No, not with my D 100 but it has happened with other electronic devices with computer chips in them. Good luck.

Rob,

This sounds similar to what happened to my 'just over a year' D100. IF you ever get hi-jpg images aprox. 1.4 Mb in size and they are B&W ... then you have all of the symptoms I had.

Nikon said it was the DC-to-DC converter circuit (chip?) that went bonkers. Plus, they repaired the ON/OFF switch, remapped a few stray pixels. Upgraded my bios to the latest ... gave it a full tuneup. Repair bill was $293.

Robert,

Haven't encountered the image problem you talk about...YET!!! That repair bill doesn't sound so nice...to think I used an N70 for years with no problems!!!

Right now, the camera is in the fridge with battery inside, as suggested by one contributor here.

Thanks for getting back to me.

After a while it now appears that the write ( read) capability to the CF card is somehow disabled--as well as access to the rear display.

Rob, have you removed the battery and inserted it again to 'reboot' the camera? When I had these problems the camera would seemingly freeze and this was the only way I could get anything to function again. After a few days of this it just stopped working ... period. Luckily I'm only a 20-minute drive away from Nikon's Torrance, CA repair site.

Good luck but it sounds all to familiar.

Robert,

Thanks again. What did they wind up repairing and what did it cost? Has the camera worked fine since?

Thanks,
Rob

PS. When I first bought it, I had some startup problem--hit the reset and never had another problem until today--and that's a little over a year ago--i.e., no more warranty!!!

I had what sounds like the same problem last month. My D100 stopped writing to the flash card; the shots remaining display disappeared from the top LCD (although other information on the top LCD continued to display), and the rear LCD stopped working altogether. Otherwise, the shutter, aperture, etc., controls seemed to work. Switching batteries and compact flash cards made no difference. I sent it to NikonUSA in Melville NY and they replaced a circuit board, had it back in about two weeks from shipment to return. Works fine now. Happily it was under warranty so there was no charge - don't know what it would have cost if the camera was out of warranty (and hope not to have to find out down the road).

I don't know if it helps (or whether you already tried it), but there are 2 ways of resetting the camera. One is the two button reset, the other uses a hidden reset button on the camera (check the manual for its location, it is explained quite near the end).

The reset button does revert all settings to the factory default.

Thanks, I tried both reset methods to no avail.

I went through the same thing & after checking, nikon told me there was corrosion dammage... although I have been a stickler for maintenance on this camera and have 23 years as a pro... I'm at a loss as to how this happened.

Bionjour and merci pour votre reponse.

I just dropped it off at a Nikon authorized service center. Gave up trying to get it to work. How much did you have to pay and what part(s) were replaced? Is yours working fine now?

I, like you, handle my cameras with great care.

Will keep you posted.

Hi Rob,

They ended up replacing the entire head... at a cost of $500 (in Canadian funds)... about $350 U.S.

I asked for the old part and will be sending it to be examined by a third party... as Nikon is unable to tell me how this happened... and I have been extremely careful with moisture, using shower caps and other tools while on location.

The camera is working fine... so far

But now my energy is focused on finding owners of other dead d100's to find out if the problem is widespread.

There was a problem with Fuji S1's having to do with the tripod socket, and the fact that you could overtighten a tripod and actually crack a circuit board. I never had this happen with my S1, but a friend of mine did. Is there any possiblity that something similar might be happening in a flex of the body, or are the reports only that it is some corrosion problem? If corrosion, I would certainly want to know how that could happen, and I think your idea of having the broken part examined is a good one.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who responded here.

The latest: I brought the camera in to an authorized Nikon repair center in New York City (Photo-Tech, on 13th St.). They called me back to inform me that the circuit board that controls writing to the CF needs replacement. They couldn't explain what caused the malfunction. I will follow up with Nikon on that--as well as a serious complaint, i.e., Just over 1 month past the warranty time and something so major fails!!!

By the way, the labor estimate is $149 and parts $129.

I really love--uh, lovED?--this camera, but if this isn't encouraging.

Will keep you posted on repair and if I get anything more on the cause.

Ask them to send you the old part back. I 'd be curious to compare notes.
