Is the Fuji iPhone App Terrible or is it just me?

Last year I upgraded from an XT2 to an XT3.

The iPhone app that Fuji makes always worked and connected quite easily to the XT2 via wifi.

I’ve had so much trouble with connecting the XT3 app and my camera.

I find it so slow to connect, and when it does, it disconnects more often then not.

I like to use it for family photos so I’m actually in them!

It’s quite disappointing how poor the app is.

Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong or is the app downright terrible.

Curious about other people’s experiences, or if anyone has any tips to possibly improve.

I feel like it may have something to do with Bluetooth versus wifi but the set up process is not clear so I’m not 100% who is at fault, me or the app!

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's terrible. It's not just you.

It isn't just you, it is me as well.

Maybe if this same subject comes up once a week Fuji will finally give us a new app that isn't useless!

I must be in minority here but the app always worked flawlessly for me. To be honest though, I only use it to transfer JPEGs from my X-T2 to iPhone. I haven't tried remote control or anything else.

While I think overall it is terrible, and that they really need to improve the app, getting connected and staying connected has never been a problem. I don't have an XT-3, and have been using it more and more with my X-T2 ( for some macro shots and self portraits ) and I have found it very reliable, connection wise. Maybe the bluetooth equipped connection is less so?

For the OP, you might want to take a look at the Cascable app. It has its own issues, but is an alternative.

The app *is* downright terrible. The only thing that works well for me is geolocation via Bluetooth.

All of Fuji's S/W is terrible - it is not you.

I gave up on it a long time ago. Now I only use card readers for transfers to phone, ipad, and computer.

I hate it. There are many threads since long time which talk about it and Fuji had more than enough time to improve the app but they never did. Such a disappointment!

I don't think it matters what OS your phone is using. I finally got a process worked out with my XT20 that consistently connected. Then along came the XT3 with its BT connection that supposedly made it all easier.... according to the PR. Which I think they did just to make it frustrating again for those of us who had a working workflow. In the end, I suspect I will kill the BT connection and just go about it the way I was doing it before.

I've never had a problem with connecting or staying connected to my X-T20. I've never had the pleasure of using an x-t3 so I can't comment there.

File transfer can be slow if I transfer large files, it's fairly quick if I use the small file option.

Overall I find it easy to use. I've mapped a button on the camera (I use the app a lot) that I hit. By the time I unlock my iPhone 8 it's found the wireless access point (the camera) and then I open the app and everything works well from there.

I would guess it depends--at least partially--on the environment you are in. If there are a lot of wireless signals or interference in the area that probably does cause issues. Things are also slower if I'm at home because my phone wont auto connect to the camera due to my home network having priority. So if I'm at home I have to actually go into settings on my iPhone and select the camera every time i want to connect.

Same, when I had XT20, not great but it worked fine then BT got involved with XT3, I often don't know what I'm doing for the connection. It take so long to be connected, I quit the app to make sure it isn't stuck. And yesterday, it took a while for me to figure out how to delete the transfer order icon, I don't even remember how I created the order. The section in the manual isn't best-described, either.

It's rubbish with my X100F. I use a card reader to transfer.

I've found connectivity to be fine with my Xt-3 (iPhone XS). I use it as a remote sometimes but not very often. Maybe I'm not using it enough to have problems.

Geolocation works okay as well but I have an external tracker for that, easier for me and doesn't wreck batteries as quickly.

Maybe it’s a matter of expectations and we want it to do more than it can. I have only expected that I could transfer a jpeg from the camera to my iPhone so I could text my wife some awesome shot I just got while out in the field or post it on social media. For that it works well enough and very reliably. I edit the image on my phone and post - it takes no time. I do wish there was an option between 3 mp and 24mp for image quality. I do choose the larger files so the details are there. The rest of the app is not of interest to me. Maybe sometime I might use the shutter release. Are there other cameras that have awesome apps? I haven’t heard of any, but then I don’t really care.

I use it occasionally with my X-H1 and Bluetooth without any issues. Mostly when my wife wants a quick photo off of it. If it is powered on and in my bag I find it easy to connect all from the app, search for the photo that I want and transfer it to my phone.i have never had any lock ups or lost connections. I use it with my iPhone 8. I have not tried using it as a remote.

Large companies that grew in the time when it was only about hardware often have no expertise in writing software nor the expertise to know they don't have it. Sadly, it's human nature not to admit this in an organization so when they hire developers, they don't know how to assess their skills or the quality of their work. Or they hire third-party companies to write these apps, thinking these apps are something peripheral and not worthy of too much attention. The fact that the application has had a poor rating for so long means no one at Fuji has his/her job tied to consumer satisfaction in this area. In other words, the company does not value this area much and has not put a leader in place to own it.

That's why the web sites (which today are complex applications) are not great either and sadly again, Fuji's web site is an example of poor design (and here 's an interesting analysis why other web sites have a similar plight).

I've been in the software industry for 30 years and have seen it time and again. Unless the executive leadership wants to change it, nothing substantial will happen. We can only hope, sigh.

It's a shocker. Not intuitive at all and doesn't do what's it's supposed to often.
