40 mm ART on SDQH

Absolutely excellent, Marco.

Superb color toning and composition.

Your earlier shot of a building for drying fishing nets (?) is still my desktop background after a year or two ...

Will you buy it Marco?

No I had it for the time of a try, a month or so. It's not my "elected" focal lenght even if its reaaaallly appealing and one could easily use just this focal. The lens in itself is gorgeous. But I can't buy every lens, I jut left my heart on the 105 Art this summer (still have to write something about that bokeh master, I have some funny stuff....)

Hallo !

As Sigma Italy ambassador I did this article recently, if You want to have a look it's on my website www.marcodadofoto.com on the BLOG section:

thanks for looking

Hi Marco,

I have looked high and low for a photographer who could demonstrate the strengths of the Sigma Foveon system and while I found a few, yours clearly demonstrated the great strengths and the flexibility of the Sigma sd Quattro through your story telling without the technical jargon that came associated with other reviews. Your images told many stories that I need to see and hear and contemplate what a Sigma sd Quattro system can do for me; especially when using the 40mm Art which is also my favourite focal length I use with my own system (eqv to 50mm full frame). Thank you for kindly sharing the photos!

I do have one question though if you can kindly can help me answer. How big of a print can you print with the SDQ-H and 40mm Art that you would consider professionally accepted? The reason I asked is that, I also am considering adding a Sigma sd Quattro (not the H) kit that includes the 30mm Art as part of my photography kit and am curious if you have any ideas how large of a print can the non-H Quattro with a kit lens print up to up that can still maintain good print dynamics. The largest print I had made with my own m4/3 kit @ 300dpi is 16x20" (A2 size) and am looking to see if the Sigma sd Quattro can easily exceed that.

Much appreciated..

David.

So you like your 105mm f1.4 Art as much as the 40mm f1.4 Art then Marco?

the 105 has more limitation of use, but a softer bokeh (one of the best), the 40 has more possibilities of use and a more "cinematographic" (between soft and nervous) bokeh. Just two different things.

It sounds like you got the 105 for its bokeh. Are they both sharp corner to corner when you stop down to f4 or f5.6 Marco?

Hi David and thanks a lot.

IN my personal experience, I do lots of stamps with 50x75 cm size, and they are spectacular.

I assume You can do bigger prints without any problem, but never tried over that size...

Lens and subject affect size limitation. 30 Kit lens (f1.4) is not opticallly equal to the 40 or the 35 or the 18-35 at 30mm. I have some large prints from DPQ/DPM/SDQH/SDI sizes 30x45 and 30x48 (short side cropped to fit paper). They look great. I am just waiting for some new samples from QC and QH - 30x45 and 30x48 (cropped to fit paper). None shot with the 30mm so the question is how the 30 will hold up in the corners. I suspect the H will go to 40x60. I may start another large print tour when I get everything together. Merrill and Quattro C /DPQand Quattro H.

Thank you Marco. Still that 40mm Art is one heck of a sweet lens; very cinematographic and smooth which reminds me of my own Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 which I use with my Micro Four Thirds camera.

Well -- after seeing Marco's sample of the 40mm Art now gives me some idea of what I would eventually get. It's just that I could get a used Sigma sd Quattro with kit lens for a pretty good price and perhaps save some money to buy the 40mm Art later. I agree with you that I would probably not be happy with the 30mm kit. I'm looking for a better system to outdo my Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 which has a 50mm eqv full frame FOV which has similar sharpness and cinematographic smoothness of the 40mm Art..

Thank you Rick for sharing your thoughts on this..

Having checked out your blog and photos a while back and being blown away then, I'm just as happy to be blown away again now. And I am.

I can see how alluring this lens could be with its exceptional IQ but the focal length - 60mm @ 1.5 and 52mm @ 1.3 - doesn't quite work for me. It's one of those lenses that you would have to have a specific use for. I would really like to know how well it would handle astrophotography wide open - and what the edge coma is like.

I understand, but, in this case - I was thinking the same (before the try on the 40mm).

After, I must say that I used that focal lenght for almost everything: landscapes, close up, street photo, of course its very good for portaits too... so I'm a little bit confused. It's just a very good lens and could be used for lots and lots of photographs :)

Thanks Vitee for the feedback You always give me, also on fb :)

The angle of view is pretty much that of a standard lens for 35mm, such as used to be supplied as a kit lens.

I personally like something longer, but really the range from 45 to 55mm on 24x36 is very usable for all kinds of subject.
