Latest E-M1X tidbits (MAJOR, if true):

I've kept all my 4/3rds SHGs and skipped the MK2, I wan't to hear more about the focus compaibility with them. This camera will meet all my needs If this puppy will work flawlessly with them, and I'm in for sure. I might add I always liked the extra size with grips.Used my E cams with the grips and flash brackets .
I kept my E-5 and skipped the Mk 1. The Mk 2 is OK but I was hoping for better.

I don’t hold much hope that the X will do PDAF with 4/3 lenses any better than the Mk 2. If it does then it probably won’t be because Olympus made a deliberate effort In support of the legacy lenses.

There is also a possibility that by optimising C-AF performance for their latest MFT lenses the X will be worse with 4/3 lenses than the Mk 2

I'm expecting the firmware update for the E-M1 MkII to bring some of the features and C-AF improvements from the E-M1X so don't give up yet! I think that Olympus' main issues with C-AF come from their algorithms rather than from hardware so it is possible that significant advances could be made with the E-M1 II hardware.

I'm hoping...

I have a big concerns about FW update for E-M1.2, Olympus would not want to hurt sales of a new camera... it will be rather "if you want good C-AF - buy E-M1x!".

If the E-M1 Mkii FW 3.0 brings an update AF and C-AF and tracking using the E-M1X software tech it will not be as good or as fast since the E-M1X has twice as fast computer power. I would also assume the E-M1X will have some more hardware improvements.

How many times have we heard that the latest Oly is brilliant in this way and brilliant in that way......................and the reality is somewhat different? I really hope that the 1X succeeds because the tech will trickle down and we may even get nicer things for the EM1.2 through FW.

Anyway, the success of the camera, if aimed at pros, will be the take-up up amongst the Canikon users. I can't really see a big sea change in this respect but I hope I am wrong.....for Oly's sake.

This is very possible, but I hope not. I keep hearing people wishing for new features to trickle down to the smaller cameras like the E-M5 and E-M10 but, to mind mind, Olympus never does this. For example, they have kept on-sensor pdaf for the E-M1 only (until the M1X). This seems to me plain stupid! Olympus needs the best camera in every market segment, or at least to compete, and other makes are moving on fast. Just look at the C-AF in (or coming soon to) the new Sony A6400 that has just been released (see dpreview video review ). Really smart AF while Olympus is still only has cdaf on most models.

Having said all of that, when Olympus launched the E-M1 MkII, they said that the product life would be about four years and that they planned lots of firmware updates including smarter C-AF for a variety of shooting situations. If they changed their mind now, they would let down their most loyal customers i.e. those that shelled out for their most expensive camera. I hope that they don't do that. I don't think they will.

I'm not expecting all the AF features or performance of the M1X because that camera is said to have double the processing power. However, a slightly restricted set of AF features for the MkII with its lower processing power would be good for us users and there would still be product differentiation between the two models.

Still hoping :-)

The E-M10 II and E-PL9 got the TruPic VIII processor from the E-M1 II. As a result it got 4K and 720p slow motion, 121 point AF system (same points and area as E-M1 II, although without PDAF).

Keeping E-M1ii customers happy and up-to-date means future lens sales. Because the camera's price has drifted downward to roughly half of what the new model will cost(?) I don't see FW updates affecting sales of the E-M1X in a meaningful way.

I've never expected E-M1ii FW updates on par with those for the E-M1, which were transformative and unique to that camera compared to the four Oly models I've owned prior to it. It's rather rare and not SOP.

Cheers,

Rick

yes Olympus needs the best camera they can make in every market segment that’s the competition they are up against I think they can do it and I hope they see this as a priority before m43 goes 4/3

No Pdaf. 16mp sensor Lesser ibis (understandable for the smaller EPL9, not sure about the other)
