Your First Camera

Got it from my dad. It dates from around 1940 or so, if I recall correctly. The mirror is beyond tarnished, and the lenses are foggy, but otherwise functional. I won't let this one go.
It appears to be in decent cosmetic condition. If you think you might want to use it or pass it along to the next generation, it would be worthwhile have a c/l/a done. I've used Krikor Maralian and Paul Ebel for service on my old Rolleis. Google them if you are interested.

Regards, Jim

Thank you Jim. I will definitely look into this. It would be great to see what they can do.

My first camera was the Canon AT-1 with FD 50mm 1.8.

My first one was the Nikon SP that my Dad taught me to use by measuring the light with the light meter and setting the aperture and shutter. I'm lucky that he gave it to me but I never used it near as much as my Kodak Instamatic 100. I took the Kodak to Israel with B&W film and developed the film myself. I think it has a focal length of 43mm and a constant aperture at f8.

I don't know where my Kodak went to but I still have the Nikon:

My absolute first was one from 80s was some Kodak with 110 film.

my first true slr was a Konica.

first digital: Nikon coolpix 995.

We had a Brownie and an Instamatic I could use growing up but the first camera I owned myself was an Albinar like this.

Hard to find the history of Albinars but they might have been a Chinon rebrand. Had that for a couple years before moving to a Pentax Super Program - loved that camera.

Mine was an Agfa, something or other, given to me as a small boy by my uncle some 55 years ago. Sadly I lost it and got this one!

My word, how things have changed!

The first camera I used extensively was a little Konica C35 - an Automatic Rangefinder camera borrowed from my father.

The first I owned was a Canonette QL1.9, bought second hand and returned to the shop the next day when it turned out to be faulty.

The first I owned and ran a film through was a Konica AutoReflex T3, bought second-hand with a Panagor 135mm f/2.8 lens.

The first digital was a little Olympus c2, which took Smartmedia cards and was powered off 2xAA batteries...

My very first own camera, when I was 13-14 years old, was a Kodak using 110 film cartridges:

Kodak Ektra 52

Kodak Ektra 52

Later, I inherited my father's Voigtländer, it had a Zeiss Ikon lens and a leather case, but I don't remember the model.

Then as a young adult I got a Pentax P50, which got me really into photography:

Pentax P50 with its 50mm lens

Pentax P50 with its 50mm lens

My first digital camera was a Canon EOS 300D (the first Rebel) with it's 18-55mm kit lens.

My first camera was a Konica C35 bought in 1975. I tested it out above water but I bought it to fit in a homemade housing to use while scuba diving.

My first camera for use above water was a second hand Yashica TL Electro with a 50mm f2.0 lens. It cost me £74 in 1979. I hardly used it because I couldn't afford the film and processing ( I was a student and drank and smoked a fair bit).

There must have been tens of millions of those Brownies sold. My grandfather had one that I recall handling in the 60's. If I'm not mistaken, looking into the viewing prism to compose a shot the subject was upside down. :-)

like in the Rolleiflex, Bronica, Hasselblad, ....another time..

My first camera- and I had these lenses(and a couple of more)! Loved it, cutting edge in some ways for its time(silicon metering cells with a LED readout). Had black flocking(instead of paint) in the mirror box which was really effective in fighting flare. Built tough too. Some day I'm going to get it and a few lenses again- though the tab on many of these for open aperture metering has been filed off to allow mounting on mirrorless adapters.

First camera I bought was this, KBgear JamCam as a teenager in 2001.

Held 8 640x480 pictures. Lots of good, grainy, noisy memories.

Then in 2004 i bought a Canon A75

Was a good camera. Wish I had bought it sooner (well probably an A60 then) and used it more. A lot easier to learn your camera now in the days of YouTube.

After that I had a few temporary cameras before buying a Nikon D60 in I think 2009 and then 2015 I started with Fuji by ordering an X-A1.
