Don't they like the USA anymore?

Maybe not high-end, but some of these countries are doing pretty well, and all of them have sizeable elites with lots of spending power. Eastern Europe is one of the most important markets for luxury stuff like high-end Mercedeses, you know. There's certainly a major market for digicams there, low-end and high-end.
Must
explain why old Europe is scrambling around trying to mend fences
with the American consumer. Maybe they'll barter some of that wine
for cameras direct and leave the US out of the loop. If sheer
numbers were important, we'd be reading that they are trying to
penetrate the Indian and African markets.
[shrug]

Look at the numbers. Digital camera sales in the EU have been pretty good, and as Steve said, the profit margins are higher.

Frankly, I'd still rather buy my cameras at American prices and the American schedule. :-)

Why are you so anti-European anyway?

After reading about the lack of interest in the US market, I don't
get it with these camera and electronics manufacturers. The largest
consumer market in the world, and they won't release new products
in the USA. Don't they like us anymore? Maybe the European
Community is the new consumer hotbed. That Euro sure looks inviting.
It may be the largest but the least profitable. Why pursue unprofitable sales when almost as large a market that is profitable is available in Europe?

It appears that Konica is leaving the US market but it appears that they will continue to market Konica in Asia and Europe.

So, they're going after the more ignorant market that will tolerate fatter margins? Is that like Marlboro selling filterless cigarettes in Uzbekistan? I can't believe that's really the reason. It more likely means that Konica and others simply haven't built up the robust infrastructure they need to compete successfully in the US market - not a big sign of confidence for their investor since the more nimble folks will leave them in the dust if they're not careful.

Seems to be George doing all the fence mending. Wonder why?

Africa, maybe not - yet. India, most certainly. China too. Times are changing.

It's true that the economy was heading south just after Bush cheated into Office at Talahasi, Florida but if he is a good President he could turn it around by now. He has no excuse not to as is the President and so is the senate house. Please open your eyes when you vote next year. Next election is crucial to all Americans well being. Do note vote blindly.

quickly. If your unemployed you wont want a new digital.
Canadian Adsl selling for $16 canadian a month (about $10 US) The
US must catch up in pricing :p
Uh, as I recall the surge in job losses started while Clinton was in office. So who's to blame?

The US market is the most competitive, and the consumers are also very price conscious. If a company cannot offer a performance or price advantage, then it will be weeded out. I'm not sure what manufacturer you are talking about but whoever it was it simply was a business decision because they don't think they can be competitive here. This is true not only in electronics but also in most other industries as well (for example, for cars, Fiat and Peuguot used to sell in the US but got weeded out).

I like Bush and will vote for him again in '04. I like him because he realizes he is the leader of the United States of America and not the entire world. So unlike his predecessor, he puts America's interests first before anyone else's. That's what the leader of a country is supposed to do. His job is not to make the rest of the world happy, his job is to manage and defend the interest of this country. Sometimes when it conflicts with the interest of other nations, we know where his loyalty is.

Yet according to the polls, if the election were held last week, Bush would still win against any other Democratic candidate (with Clark coming very close). This just shows polls mean nothing.
The more that 50% of Americans who aren't happy with the present
appointee?

Hmmm...if I recall correctly, during the SARS scare, the great canadian health care system overloaded and a lot of patients have to come south of border for treatment. Hmmm, a few thousand people infect and it overload the health care system of an entire country?

One piece of advice, take one semester of college level macro-economics course, and you will see how wrong you are. Bush did everything he could within his power to prevent the economy from imploding. The great bubble economy of the Clinton era really did him no favors but I think he held it together quite well. Remeber the great depression and the stagnant economies of the 60s and 70s. Those were the immediate effects of bubble economies popping too. Just be glad we are not seeing that now.

What fence mending? He certainly hasn't given an inch at the UN. Good for him!

Not one liberal has sttated how they will help protect us from future attacks on our country, all they do is bash Bush, and Gore cheated in Florida first by trying to recount the votes over and over and by going to the courts plus he wanted to discount the military absentee ballots..hmmm just who tried to disenfranchise whom? Besides everyone now knows the truth about Gore and Florida, repeating the old lies does not work anymore

This is a older thred but here goes. The reason why patients were sent to other places, also including other provinces is not because of the healthcare system. It happened because higher capacity hospitals in Toronto had to be quarantined; making it almost impossible to give care to other people who did not suffer from SARS. Believe me, I was living a 2 minute walk from the main downtown hospitals. I think if this happened in any American city, it would have been at the same scale of shutdown.

Although the Canadian healthcare system isn't perfect, it's still better then whats available in the US.

You people are suicidal to be thinking Bush for another term. What is up with the American people lately? OK, 9-11 happened and since Bush was in charge we should all follow is lead like Lambs waiting to be slaughtered. Then five years from now when 500K more people are out work and gas cost $4 per gallon we could at lease say that we did the American think and stuck by our Pres.
