Where do you share your pictures?

I never undestood where the motivation for "sharing" one's work with unknown masses of individuals on the Internet is coming from?
I don't get it either, and I don't do it.
The undeniable downside is that one's work ends up misappropriated and used who knows where and for who knows what purpose. Can someone explain to me what the possible upside is?
Can't think of one, other than attempting to get others to stoke your ego.
Using Facebook doesn't mean you are sharing your work with unknown masses.

Suing Facebook doesn't mean you're trying to get your ego stroked either.

You guys do know there are many ways to use Facebook and many of those ways are nothing like you seem to think, right?

I have a private server with html "photo-albums". Links to those are passed on to friends, family, etc... that I have some connectin with in "real life". It is a method for communication between me and those that I care for and, possibly, have some interest in me personally.

I could also never understand this.

I send my pics to interested friends via WeTransfer, but mostly print them and give them away.

There's definitely a potential upside depending on what your goals are.

I've always shared images on Facebook; keeping in mind that my FB is very tightly controlled. A little over a year ago I started sharing heavily on Instagram. From Instagram I've had a number of people reach out to me and ask me to photograph them. They paid me money. Bonus.
I fully understand the need to advertise for any business, whether full or part time. However, my assumption, in the context of this thread, was that "sharing" meant making one's work available to the general public in complete absence of any commercial consideration. That is the the activity of which the motivation leaves me somewhat puzzled.

No...never been on Facebook. Whenever I ask people how they use it, I get answers that sound a lot like "blah, blah, blah" to me.

You're puzzled because you don't seem to understand that sharing on Facebook does not mean sharing with the general public unless you want to.

Then maybe you're not the best person to respond to posts about Facebook.

That's not fundamentally different than posting them on Facebook or your website.

I do both. Some photos I'm happy to share with anyone, particularly to promote local events or community groups. Others, more personal photos, photos of family members for example, I print and main and/or post for family only on Facebook.

I'm not a huge fan of Facebook but it does seem that most people are on there, making it an effective method of reaching an audience whether a limited group or the general public.

If one trusts the representations of that company in regard of who can access the photographs, the posting of photographs with restricted access may be the equivalent of what I do on my "darkweb" server. So this is not what I was talking about.

I was wondering about the motivation to make one's work freely available to the general public on the Internet, on whatever service and by whatever means.

I didn't - go read it again.
Sorry, I misunderstood this to be a comment about Facebook or at least social media.

What on earth is a "darkweb" server?

It was a comment about "...unknown masses of individuals on the Internet".

Whatever. There are also unknown masses of individuals using Facebook or social media/networks to do things other than stroke their egos.

"I never undestood where the motivation for "sharing" one's work with unknown masses of individuals on the Internet..."

That is the comment to which I responded. Please read with comprehension.

I still don't understand why one would do that.

What on earth is a "darkweb" server?
Simply a technical term for a web resource that is accessible only by explicit URL, and not by search-engine indexes or by references in social media or similar platforms.

That's not dark web and you might not want to associate a private server that shares photos as being part of the actual dark web.

But that was the context in which I initially shared my images on FB and IG; completely non-business related. It morphed into a sort of business as a result of the sharing.

Also, it really depends on the the why of those taking photos. If it's an artistic motivation, than sharing is an obvious thing. Why else to create something if it's not to be shared? What better way to share something than to do so on FB or IG?

At the end of the day there are all kinds of valid reasons to simply share one's artistic endeavors on FB or IG, depending on the goal of the one doing the sharing. A monetary goal or "ego stroke" aren't the only valid reasons.

I'd say the same difference as there is between leaving your house unlocked, with anybody able to enter at any time, and opening your door only to people you invited.

I do both. Some photos I'm happy to share with anyone, particularly to promote local events or community groups. Others, more personal photos, photos of family members for example, I print and main and/or post for family only on Facebook.

Sounds like you already have an idea in your head what FB is all about, so you've subconsciously set up filters so anything anyone tells you isn't going to sound positive.

No, they just don't tell me any specifics.
