Is this merely a typo? PC Magazine is reporting a new F-848. Is this the F-828 that everyone's talking about or is this a new camera?

That's odd. Not only does it say F848, but it also lists the zoom range as 28-280!

So, either someone really wasn't paying attention when they were typing or Sony is putting a 28-280 zoom on the F828 and calling it a F848!

Also, the F828 was supposed to sell for $1200, but all the pre-order listings I've seen are around $1000. Because of competition from the 300D, could they have lowered the price on the F828 and priced the longer zoom model at $1200?

I'm not sure that this makes any sense. Perhaps someone typing up the report had a long night last night.

Look at the larger image, and you'll see on the lens 7.1-51. That's the 7x zoom range of the F828.

They (PC Mag.) are usually behind, and many times incorrect in their digicam news. Not a trustworthy source. [Disclaimer: I subscribe to that very magazine].

They'll get the reader's letters around late next week of their error, and learn that it is really an 828, not an 848. A retraction, called 'corrections' will be buried in the November issue.

A partial slice from my predicted "828 Timeline" below. Actual results, as they become available, are in brackets...

- - - - - - -
.
.

October. It's still not out, but STF gets posts every day asking where the cheapest place to order F828 is.
[This actually began to happen in mid-September]

Oct. 3. Yet still more posts on "Can 828 take MS Pro sticks?" and "What about regular MS in 828?"

= = = = Where we are now with PC Magazine = = = = =

Oct. 5. Popular Photography and Peterson's just only hears about the 828. Magazines like PC World are just beginning to hear rumors about Minolta A1. There are posts about that too. No 828 mentioned.

[Post 9-26-03 about lack of facts in article in PC Magazine - they call it an '848']

Oct. 18. The first Ebay auctions from a known scammer go online claiming they have early 828's in stock, albeit very low quantities. They are in Urzwannastan and only want to accept their own bizarre method of payment. Somebody here asks "Should I order one of these for $1129?" "Is it a good deal?" "Is this a scam?"
[These bogus auctions began way early, about Sept. 10th]
