Problem: wife is gifting me the 50-140

Quick update: I found the box yesterday and was able to resist opening it. Still have 2 weeks to go though so I'm in absolute agony right now. Any ideas on useful distractions?
Think about which camera bag will fit the beautiful but big addition to your gear ;-)
Alas, I have 3 different bags to fit different levels of gear and I already tested the 2 larger ones with the new lens when I rented it last year and it fits fine.

You mean like distracting her by putting a brick in the box?

Don't do it.

;)

Think about something equally thoughtful and generous to give your wife for Christmas (if this has not already been suggested--didn't read all the posts).

Just write "I love you" on the bottom of the box

My goal is to let her have the satisfaction of surprising me. Just having trouble containing my excitement for 2 weeks.

Did you know she reads this forum?

Great idea. Perhaps a 16-55? ;-) I'm sure she'd really appreciate the aesthetics and might even let the OP use it (unless he already has one, of course... didn't check the equipment list).

My birthday is coming up and though she didn't mention it, I spotted a suspicious charge of CDN $1920.99 on our joint credit card. That is exactly the price (tax included) of the Fuji XF 50-140 and its from Henry's, a local camera store. Now, the question is: How in the world can I play dumb for the next few weeks so she can keep it a "surprise"? Worse, I may need acting lessons for when she actually gives it to me. :-|
You have trained your wife well. That is outstanding. It is rare for a photographer to have a wife that is so considerate and buys her husband expensive lenses, even if it is your money she is using to do it.

For your Birthday, ask for the 8-16.

It is always good for the marriage for her to put your needs above her own. More marriage counselors should read this post. It is the key to happiness.

You will love the 50-140. What a great lens!

Nice try. Are you guys trying to get me killed?

Not sure who trained whom.

Technically it is our money - all our accounts are joint.

My birthday is the 25th, so this is it. Besides, 8-16, nice as it is, is not my kind of lens.

Strange how that never took off eh?

It is. I rented it a year ago and was really impressed but felt at the time that I would not get enough use out of it to justify the cost. Fortunately, that decision has been taken out of my hands. :)

Nah. I double checked the Mod guidelines and I'm pretty sure we're not allowed to do that. :-) :-)

I very much doubt it. I tried to interest her in photography to no avail.
My wife is not interested in my photography at all, but I have trained her to be patient while I shoot all day on our walks while traveling, which is all the time.

Teresa has become very savvy to my tricks and attempts to turn her into my personal camera lens pack mule, or should I say "Sherpa."

I usually try to plant at least one lens in her pack or big purse. But I screwed up and stuck the 50-140 in there one day on the last trip and she noticed it immediately. I got busted on that. Sometimes she doesn't notice if I slip the 50 F2 or Rok 12 in her bag.

I wish she was more reasonable and would carry at least three of my lenses. (The woman can be unreasonable at times and won't listen to sound logic about my real needs.) I keep telling her if she carries more weight it is a better workout. The ideal situation would be for her to carry 3 or 4 of my lenses while I carry maybe 4. That would give me 7 or 8 lenses while I travel shoot all day, which would dramatically improve my photography.

Study this equation. It is proven math: More Lenses = Better Photography, or ….

GAS = Buying more Lenses = Happiness

I tell you... The things I have to put up with. 🤓

I'm not certain exactly what the process is for having someone nominated for sainthood. However, if such a person were ever worthy of it, it would most certainly have to be Teresa.

I admire my own wife's ability to put up with my GAS, photo related side trips, etc. etc. However, after reading your accounts, Greg, I'm pretty sure she has it easy in comparison.

St. Teresa. Has a nice ring to it.

:-)

Seems "unreasonable" is a matter of perspective. :)
