Video housings that don't require shutter releases seem much simpler. Does anyone use a shutter remote under water. Can you just use a simple drybag or sandwich bag for the remote?

Not at any significant depth. Even if it doesn't leak, water pressure will push in all the buttons simultaneously, rendering the device useless. Also, if the remote relies on IR light transmission, the camera housing will block it, and RF range will be severely degraded if not blocked outright, especially if the camera is in a metal housing.

ah pentax makes an inexpensive wireless remote:

The way it has screws going inside the casing makes me think it's more splash-proof than water-proof; certainly not for immersion to 10+ meters. Remember that for every 10m of depth, you have an extra 1kg pressing on every square centimeter, or, in American units, 14.5 pounds for every square inch. At 30m (100'), that's 3kg or 43.5 pounds.

Interesting, we can talk more about this. Do you know a good cheap water proof emount adapter? The nikonos ones are like $90.
