..Just noticed on my new second copy of the P1000 camera..

..from the wide angle at 24mm, when zooming in, would increment at 26mm first, then to the 28mm..

..and I'm not certain if my first copy of the P1000 (that's in the shop) does that.. if I remember correctly, it goes from 24mm then straight to 28mm..

..just wondering..

..Cheers..

Mine , which was an early copy, goes 24,26,28,30,32 etc but it’s very sensitive so it’s easy to skip over one of them at any time...

..Ahhh, thanks for checking! :-)

..so there was something wrong with my first copy's lens.. when I first sent it in, they listed the lens as "damaged".. but the technician must have known "parts" is hard to get at this early time, and he tried to repair it.. of course now with my second time sending in, they are in the process of replacing the lens part.. the repair is currently "on hold" while waiting for the part..

..Cheers..

Checked mine: 24,26,28,30,32, etc..., but as Dan remarked, it's very sensitive, thus it's very easy to skip a step or even two, when you're in a hurry :)

Happy shooting,

Augustin
..Thanks for checking, Augustin! :-)

..it's strange how my first copy seems to "skip" the 26mm, or could be I just had not noticed it before until now..

..Cheers..

"If" it gets repaired you could try using the side zoom button which is slower than the toggle. This may show you better stepping in the focal length.

Is your second P1000 better than the one you returned?

BTW, does the P1000 have a menu setting to turn zoom memory on and off? On the P900 with it set to off you can zoom in tiny bits as you like, but if the zoom memory is on, it goes from 24 to 28 to 35 etc. and you can't stop in between all the various zoom points. That one drives me nuts so I make sure zoom memory is off unless I want to see the actual zoom distance in the viewfinder (only visible when zoom memory is "on").

I find this very interesting. I had to send in my P900 twice...first time Nikon directed me to send it to a contractor repair utility (United Group, now mysteriously out of business) and they claimed to have replaced the "lens assembly", which as far as I could determine, was replacing certain parts within the lens. That didn't help, and in fact, focus was worse when I got it back.

The second time Nikon had me send it to them in L.A. and they then in turn sent it to Nikon's own repair in New York. When that one came back it was listed a a lens replacement, which I assume means the entire lens was replaced. It did look like a new and different lens when I examined it.

It seems like Nikon should just send you a complete camera replacement rather than holding it endlessly waiting for a part, especially since it's a brand new camera and was clearly defective out of the box.

I’m with you. If I’m going long I don’t want to have to pull the lever all those times...just once and hold it.

In the P1000 the su zoom distance is visible even when zoom memory is off.

Yes but with zoom memory on, it zooms in increments and stops at each one until you pull the lever again. But with it off it shows the zoom length as you zoom out but does not stop until 3000. You can see it so if you know you want to go to 1000 for example you can see your progression and stop at 1000. Not having to stop at every increment like when it’s on. (Hope I got that right LOL).

..Thanks for this tip! :-)

..previously, I tried using the side zoom button, for some reason, I could not get used to using it.. but I'll give it a try again.. ;-)

..This time when spoke with a supervisor, she confirmed Nikon is no longer using United Group, and is now doing the repairs in-house..

..because the P1000 is still considered to be a new release, the available parts may not be readily available.. had noticed my repair went from Parts Hold, then to Shop, then back to Parts Hold again after a few days.. which must mean the parts that came in was not good, and they had to reorder another..

..Cheers..

That's not encouraging about Nikon's quality control on parts!

..well, me thinks the lens module for the P1000 is very complex, and may not be easy to make..

..when I was doing computer repairs, this happens alot.. where a part comes in, when checked, it was deemed "doa", and the part had to be sent back, then another one is ordered..

..Cheers..
