I went late in Sept. My wife, daughter and grand kids, I did my best to take photos and compare the P1000 with my broken P900.

Three miles away, only a white dot with naked eye, wild fire smoked filled Lamar Valley.

These are the MT. in Lamar Valley where I found the Goats, in the year 2016.

So far the P1000 is shooting close to the P900 IQ, I found some difference I will discuss later in part 2.

Very nice shots, all of them. It's impressive how close the animals were (except for the goats). On my trips to Yellowstone few of the animals have been that close, though most were close enough to get shots at 400-600mm FL.

For the goats, you used a digital zoom and a tripod, right? Which digital zoom did you use?

Sorry to see the coyote so close to humans (not your fault at all, I realize). Getting habituated to humans often means they have to be "removed", which is the end of that individual coyote.

Yes on tripod and normal zoom.

Thank you Augustin, I think the P1000 shot through the smoke and haze at the MT. goats very well, at such long distance and long reach.

About the goats, well..., no offense, but they are quite poor.

That said, it doesn't mean they are useless: I suppose it's always absolutely "magic" to see just a white point with the naked eye, and to discover what it is in reality, thanks to the incredible reach of the zoom.

I'm beginning to understand why so many fellows here are fond of superzooms!

Thank you André, the reason I posted the digital around 6000 mm through smoke is so I can compare it with the P900 shot from the same spot, there is no other camera that can equal that feat at the same price point as the P1000 and P900. Yes it is exciting to see a small white spot turn into a MT. Goat. Have a great day, looking forward to more of your photography! :-D
 
It's true that you'd like better quality for the pics of the goats, but there are times when a shot with less than ideal IQ is better than no shot at all. Atmospheric interference is a bugger - nothing you can do about it.

Thanks Bill, I agree and I did not want to take the 6 mile trail, getting old! :-D
 
Mountain goats. However, when they overtake your position it gets a bit scary! Especially when a couple youngsters ignore your advice and turn a situation dangerous.

Our Wolf pictures and video really could have used the P1000! They were so far away in Lamar Valley. As it was we were the only people to spot them. Used the Pronghorn as spotters!

I truly wished for a P1000 when we were in Yellowstone! (they were listening!)

Thank you Dodge, if you go past pebble creek campground at the far end of Lamar valley, almost out of the park, we have seen them every time. If I took the 6 mile trail I could get better images, but I am getting a little older and It seems I am always with my fun but young grand kids!

When you get ready to go again, I will give more detail.

..I enjoyed seeing all of them..

..but to me, here's the "wow" factor, are the super long zoom captures, this is what the P1000 is all about.. (see below)
