Remarkable capture, I was not previously aware of this behavior.

Marvellous shot. I prefer the colour. I think the hint of lens flare actually adds to the composition in this one.
Thanks.... This gets a lot of oohs in print....especially from those who know my wife. :-)

Nice set JS. I wish I had a good place to shoot indoors when the weather is poor... like it is today. =)

Took a little side trip to the Valley of Fire after a family get together in Las Vegas for Thanksgiving (I know, strange choice for Thanksgiving... not my idea :-) ). So, this is a very cool place, great for hiking and photography (best in the late Fall or Winter). It's very appropriately named and represents some really interesting and beautiful geology. I thought I'd share a few pics I managed to grab while there. All were taken with my X-H1 and 16-55.

Very cool. I like the rock formations. I can see using a telephoto there to create near abstracts. Another place I have to visit! Thanks for the tour.

I'd been at Pen Ponds, Richmond looking for a Great White Egret (quite a rare visitor there) that had been reported. I only had my 55-200mm and the GWE stayed stubbornly a spot in the distance in the out of bounds nature reserve. My attention was grabbed by a nearby commotion where more than a dozen Cormorants had herded a shoal of small fish into a bay. Seagulls quickly became aware and Great crested grebes, herons etc, all took advantage. I'd never seen this behaviour from Cormorants before and neither had any of my fellow watchers. As the fray moved out of the bay I followed with my camera. Only later when I downloaded the files to my PC did I see what I'd missed. Checkout the center background of the second picture and top center of the last!

Top center.
Top center.

I did get my pictures on other days with 100-400mm.

The sky is full of holes that let the rain get in, the holes are very small - that's why the rain is thin.

Really gorgeous.

Looks like a great spot. I like the angle you got on the smaller birds so they are back lit. The wings really stand out.

Thanks, JS. I packed very light for this trip, only taking my 16-55 and 10-24. Alas, the only thing I have longer than that is the 100-400 and it stayed home this time. The 10-24 never came out of the bag.

It's a long-ish drive from Vegas but well worth it. The area shown here is only a small part of what is a beautiful and decent sized area full of formations like this. I'd probably visit during the late Fall or Winter though. It's hotter then blazes in the Summer.

Cool place indeed not too far from LV for landscapes shooting

Did you have a chance to visit this so called poor man's Wave?

Sigh... no. That's gorgeous, but we obviously missed that location. I love the light and composition of your image. Our trip was a bit rushed and unfortunately, we returned to pretty well the same area I visited a few years back. Next time, I'd like to spend more time exploring different areas of the park.

Thanks for sharing. That is a really impressive formation and lovely capture. I hope you have a large version of it hanging on a wall somewhere. It's more than worthy.

I never shot the SPro but I can see why it was loved for its colour rendition. A great memory to have.

Good to see a focus-stacked picture of the size of a flower John - especially with the 60mm f2.4 which I own. Really well judged Dof and perfect white balance. Can you remember the details of the stacking by any chance?

Vic

So disappointing to not find an actual surfing picture Chris. ;-)

As much as I enjoy using my Fuji X trans bodies and lenses, I'd swap for a Fuji MF and a couple of lenses.

Thanks, Vic. I still own 2.....one very used and one slightly used but will keep them around.

Sharply captured images. It looks like the X2.0 TC works better with the 50-140mm f2.8 than it does with the 100-400mm.
