I've been vacillating on whether to upgrade my a7r ii for the r mark 3 since it came out.

More recently I was thinking of picking up the cheaper a7iii instead to supplement and keep the a7rii... the only thing that's stopped me really is the mark 3 is still near on impossible to find in Australia and the narrowing gap in price between it and the r mark 3 gave me pause.

well yesterday with black friday deals I picked up a new A7riii from bricks and mortar store Digidirect for $3484au that with Sony promotion $500au gift car brought down to $2984au (equiv $2160US)... pretty much the going rate for the A7iii here if you can find one.

there may be cheaper grey-market or online stores but have had good experience with Digidirect so great to buy from them; the deal is still going today for any other aussies out there waiting to plunge.

now just getting the 3 setup... love the EVF and AF speed already :-)

I might even still keep the A7rii for my manual lenses and sony play-memories timelapse.

Wow, that is cheap. I forget what I paid for my A7r3 from Digidirect now (it was about a year ago) but it was something like $4,800!

Congrats on your new camera. I love mine. I also still have my A7r2. One unexpected bonus with the A7r2 was I got an underwater camera housing for it (I am not sure you can for the A7r3). I used it recently snorkelling in coral in Vanuatu. It was great.

Also as you say the A7r2 has time lapse app functionality and other apps like smooth reflections (I used that on some cascades in Vanuatu).

Also for nightscapes you can disable the star eater by using up to 30 second exposures and set the drive to continuous hi or low.

I also plan to have mine modified for astro where the low pass filter is replaced with a more nebula imaging friendly one. The A7r2 is supposed to be very sensitive to that type of light compared to other cameras once modified. Hopefully. I have wanted that for a while. Resale prices of the R2 are not too low for me to be motivated to sell. Its still an awesome camera 3 years on. It just shows what a major leap it represented at the time.

Greg.

thanks Greg, yes I was an early adopter with the Mark 2 and paid $4000au for it when it came out so am getting the mark 3 quite a bit cheaper. Still an awesome camera, just the mark 3 seems a little more awesomer :-)

Wow, that was very cheap!

I got mine from JB Hi-Fi, they had an α7III in stock that reserved to me and the following morning when I went to buy it, another guy in the store sold it. In compensation they gave me a big discount on the α7RIII plus 50 months interest free, although you got those $500 on the EFTPOS card.

But I got a discounted Batis 40mm, Digidirect had all Zeiss lenses on sale as well.

Enjoy your new camera, yes, it is awesome.

Super envy haha, I paid full price when it arrived Australia first launch.

Thanks for the heads up. Was planning on waiting for the A7siii but may take this up.

Didn't notice the Zeiss lenses ... oh well I overspent my pocket money anyway :-)
You would have got a better price on the Batis a little while back. The US$/AUD has killed our pricing.

Indeed, earlier this year there was a "wedding promotion"or so where some lenses were at 25% but I believe that applied to 85mm onwards. At that moment I got the Loxia 85mm around $450 cheaper than regular price. I remember the Batis 135mm in $2200 while now it's over $2900.

Sale is still on plus 12 months interest free but I know you will behave well tonight lol

I managed to negotiate 15% off my Sony 100-400 as well so it was a good day :)

I saw this on the ozbargain website and was also tempted. But then it was just way too much camera for my skills/abilities.

I'd already spent significant time talking myself out of an a7rii which would have been just shy of $2000aud net in the hand. There are some ridiculously good deals on a yearly basis now, which just goes to show that even if the sony lenses are more expensive, the bodies themselves can be had at such a good price that it doesn't even really matter.

It also really tanks the second hand market for bodies though, which is extra incentive not to pay full RRP, but something along the lines of 50-75% RRP seems like a good spread.
