Hi,

I am new to wildlife photography. I own Nikon D5100. I am looking for a budget lens to start with which can take good close up shots of objects from 10-30 feet distance. I am mainly interested in birds, insects, lake wildlife. Static and moving objects.

I was reading reviews of 70-300, new tamron 18-400 and few other. Not sure which one is right. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tony,

The Tamron 18-400 is capable of doing this. You might be surprised by the price

Thanks Morris.

Heard Tamron 18-400 is not good at 10 feet. Gets better from 50 ft. Is that true?

Insects at 10-30 feet are very small, Have you considered the Sigma/Tamron 150-600 ?

Hi Tony,

I suggest you go to a store with your camera and try the lens on it. Take photos and bring them home and look at them big on your monitor with a critical eye. Everyone has different tolerances. I just looked at the test photos I took with this lens and discovered that it dose not report subject distance. This could be a minor annoyance if used with flash.

Thanks Graham.

That is quite large lens. I am looking for a smaller size lens (and investment) to start with.
