Method for roll paper with s9000?

Hello,

Your response on the following questions will be greatly appreciated.

1. I would like to know if it is possible to "rig up a fixture" such that roll paper can be used with the s9000?

Whilst I believe that the s9000 is not designed for a roll paper feed, I don't understand why paper wider than A3 couldn't either be manually fed into the printer, or off a custom roll feed?

2. If (1) above is possible, then are there any other limitations, like the drivers ability to handle the larger file sizes with longer paper?

Similarly, can the driver be set to a custom page size, wider than A3+?

If these issues above can be overcome, then I don't see why large landscape format prints couldn't be achieved with the s9000?

Note:

Currently I don't own an s9000 printer, I am trying to decide whether to purchase it or the similar epson 1270/80, and the maximum paper size is about the only thing I have an issue with at present.

Looking forward to your feedback,

Adrian

If you use Windows98, then it can do at least 88" x 8" wide and at least 65" x 12" wide. Those lengths are just the longest I've done and gave no indication as to what the maximum might be.

I simply loaded precut paper lengths into the printer and caught them carefully as they came out.

The trick is to use the Windows98 driver and set Banner mode as well as Photo Glossy Paper - this is where the Win98 requirement comes in, XP and Win2K drivers don't allow those two settings at the same time.

Finally you need software that can accept a custom print area - I use QImage for this.

Beyond that, I expect the limit will be memory/disk space in your computer (the spool files are HUGE) and at what point you run out of ink ;-)

Chris,

Thanks a lot for your reply - it has pretty much answered all of my questions. I think I am set on purchasing this printer now :D

Your panoramas look great, and are exactly what I hope to be able to do with this printer. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Unfortunately I use XP, is there any talk of an updated driver with the custom page & glossy paper setting? If necessary I will install 98, but seems a shame to have to go back.

Thanks again,

Adrian

P.S. If im not mistaken, in the last panorama on your website, the same hill appears twice? (all the others are fantastic).

While I have not tried what you suggest, I can tell you that Photoshop 7 will allow fully custom Canvas Size / Image Size, and that the S9000 Driver allows you to specify Custom Paper Dimensions (limited to 13" wide) prior to printing.

Glad to have been of help.

Thanks, I enjoy doing them but don't have big enough walls to display them all :-(

Not that I'm aware of - indeed someone on here did enquire of Canon to be told that the "feature" in the 98 driver is a bug that was fixed in the XP/2K driver. That doesn't sound too unlikely to me, since Canon don't make photo glossy banner paper. It's about the only reason I have a dual-boot PC.

Not in the last one, but I'm not sure that you're not right about the last but one. That'll teach me to check what automatic stitching software has done! Thanks for pointing it out.

NB, if anyone else read this, that shot's coming down until I've got it checked out ;-)
