In Windows 7, updates usually give you a list of several updates, often divided into 'Important' and 'Optional'. You can install all or some, and you can hide some so you never see them again (with some exceptions).

Is there anything like that in Win10 Pro? I know you can defer (for a while) updates, but I've don't remember reading if there is any finer degree of control.

For instance, can you select some updates to install now and defer others? Or is it an 'all or nothing' - you either take or defer a whole package? And I assume 'hiding' isn't an option at all, since you will have to install the updates sooner or later.

Here are the options you get in Win 10 Pro:

The two drop-down options at the bottom allow...
Thanks. As I had feared, pretty much 'all or nothing', with the exception of deferring. :-x
Nobody mentioned wushowhide?

Interesting.

(Quote) "Working with Windows 10 is an interesting phenomenon. Often, functionality is hidden or purposefully obfuscated, making administration work that much harder compared to earlier editions of Windows. Then, because this operating system is so popular, there are always many clever ways and workarounds for pretty much every problem.

Finding the right tools is almost as important as knowing what the issue is..."

If concerned about updates and you have the Pro version, then just defer them. I always defer feature updates for 6 months to give MS time to iron out the bugs due to their poor software QA. The latest 1809 release was a prime example.

BTW I set the network connection as a metered connection so it won't update automatically and then click Check for Updates to see what's available. There is a fixit to stop updates which I think still works with the latest builds:

I just have it sitting on my Notebook's desktop as Windows just loves to install the wrong video driver.

Re-released today. IMO they should be calling it 1811, but no... :-(

And my existing 1809 install is getting updated this morning.

This doesn't help if you have a driver that keeps getting replaced with a bad one.

Thanks to Janoch for the indirect link to wushowhide.

Although that write-up does not say how it works on releases after 1607.

Just installed Microsoft Windows 10 (today - and free). I had Vista 7. No problem once I closed down the PC and restarted it - again. Very quick. Before I restarted the computer google was VERY, VERY slow. Magic. :)

As I said before: It would be so simple to fix - just give back to users the ability to manage their own computers, for those who wish to do do. The rest can always leave automatic updates on.
Good links there, Bill. Going to read up on this (incl. the comments of course). Thank you!

Until recently I'd have said that I found that no issue, as updates had always gone without major problems for me.

That was until 1809. Microsoft installed that on 3 of my machines before they pulled it. I did not lose any files (and I have back-ups anyway) but I have been affected by a number of other bugs in 1809, which have not yet been fixed by further updates.

From the trade press, I gather that Microsoft have severely scaled back their software testing. Certainly 1809 was a pile of poo.

Microsoft's Software-as-a-Service has become Software-as-a-Disservice. They need to launch new builds much more carefully, and perhaps go down to one a year with much more testing before roll-out.
Agreed . . . that's why I waited soooo VERY long before upgrading to 10. Works great now.

Yup. 1984 for sure.

Comments read,

"have a feeling they won't learn.. And you guys remember the old VTs (video terminals)? For all I know, Microsoft wants us accessing Windows "as a service" remotely on Terminals in the future.. The problem is that more an more people are just users, not administrators (if you get my meaning) and may actually want that to happen... IDK.

That is a nightmare scenario...

This is exactly what they are planning on moving windows to. Terminals that you connect to the cloud from.

I wonder how this is all working out with business clients that purchase licenses in bulk.

Enterprise versions have a higher degree of control over updates.

Filibuster has too much time on his hands :-D
Good joke on all concerned. :-)

Even better if the last image was a Fast Ring Insider; we get whole new builds on a roughly weekly basis.

There's also an old classic...

:-D

Someone mentioned "metered connection" and "defer update" , but both has been known to be overriden by wu...

The utility wushowhide isn't just for drivers btw. It will list available updates of any kind.

Which reminds me of my favorite Windows 10 feature, the new "Check for updates" button! Now it means "Download, run and install immidiatly"... my advice is always to ensure system backup is up-to-date, before clicking anything...

Keeps hanging my computer after awhile. I have spent a lot of time with Task Manger to no avail! Any suggestions? I am really surprised that Vista 7 worked so well and 10 hangs up so often. Very discouraged as this is MS very latest attempt. Every thing is updated. 16 gb of fairly fast ram, etc. 4 gb video card. Running at 3.11. Now Adobe insists I run 10 for some features!

Run with Windows 7. SERIOUSLY!
