Ibis via 500PF and I carried the kit 5 miles

Maybe because of huge crops. The Pelican was 1/8 mile distant when imaged. I was on warm sand, he was over cool water; so thermodynamics might also have been in play. Plus I am amateur.

Agree, heat wave has a huge impact on sharpeness especially for long distance shots.

Did you have VR on? Even with shutter speed at 1/2500 it may also add some softeness to a photo.

Jerste,

Thanks for chiming in.

Many times desparate for a shot, I've shot across the inside of a warm vehicle---better half driving, me in the passenger seat---into cold outside air. Blurry pics almost every time. So heat cold thermals are real and just something we have to deal with when shooting long glass.

Another thing I'm sure is possible, I've yet to do MFA (micro focus adjust, a Sony term since I'm a Sony guy and can't remember Nikon's term) on the D500+500PF. I'll get around to it sometime this winter when I'm house bound.

Bottom line for me the aging amateur photographer is that the 500PF is a bellwether. This lens got a fully in deep Sony guy to taste the Nikon waters. I do think, again as I age, that the 300PF will end up even more favored over the 500PF simply due to weight. As amazing as the 500PF is to me the 300PF moreso.

Here's another one from that long 5 mile day.

And here's the Flickr link for a better image-

Hi MedicineMan999

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely bird shots. They look crisp and clear.

I see you shoot at f8, which renders the background slightly busy. Are you not happy with the quality wide open? Do you perhaps have some similar shots at f5.6?

Thanks and God bless,

Thank you so much!

It seems like the out of focus background is quite pleasant, although not as pronounced as with faster lenses...

Obviously if a bird were a bit closer, it would look even smoother....

Seems very similar to my 300mm f4 wide open.

I suspect I will wait a bit to see IF a 400mm f5.6 emerges, or till I can get a good used 500mm f5.6 for a more affordable price!

Thanks and God bless while enjoying your new toy!
