Hi All,

I am a Nikon D850 shooter and just bought my first Sony Mirrorless, A7R3, I bought the body only and is arriving soon, I have been on the fence for a while deciding what lens to buy for it, I can not afford any G glass right now, could anyone recommend a first lens, I have £500 Max to spend, I would love a nice 50mm but I am unsure about the Zeiss offerings, or a Slower 28-70? as you all would know what has scored high for quality I'm sure you can help,

Thank you all!!!

Tamron 28-75 f2.8 does it all and does it very good.

... or the Tamron Splashy suggested. Depends on whether you prefer zooms or primes. You also may want to make yourself a "lens road map": what's your second, third, fourth and fifth lenses going to be? Make sure your first lens makes a good fit.

I check your gear list. You now own three brands, Nikon, Fuji and Sony. Do you really need all of three? Logically if you still keep D850, you might be better to get a Z7 or Z6 to complement and still can use your F lenses well via adapter. Also X-T3 and A7r III conflict each other. X-T3 has better video spec but A7r III video is pretty good also especially in 1.5x crop mode. Then A7r III IQ is much better than X-T3. So if you don't really need X-T3 why not sell it to invest into FE lenses?

To OP, all lenses suggested above are very good, also one of 16-35 zoom, some prime. There are so many choices from Sony and their party. You have 42mp FF sensor so you should start investing some good quality lenses to leverage its potential.

Hi Thanks for your reply, I took the XT3 back to exchange for the A7R3, I forgot to take it off my list, so its Nikon and Sony now, I wanted Eye AF so I went with Sony, I don't like the Nikon Mirrorless cameras yet, regards

Depending on what you shoot your beast option might be to adapt you lenses. The comlit pro is $500. Not ideal for moving stuff but very effective for portraiture. The best optically native sony lens in the that price range is the 85 f1.8.

I saw the score the 85 got on DX0 its really an amazing lens, I love the idea of getting this lens, but Im torn between a Zeiss 50 1.8 or that 85?

I see you own both the Nikon 50 and 85 as do/did I. The both work with the comlite adapter. I own the sony 85 1.8 its a great lens better than the nikon version. the only two native lenses I own is the 85 and the 24-105 both are really good lenses. I shot with my adaptor for the first 6 months of owning the a7r3. As far as 50 or 85 again depends on what you shoot.

I just bit the bullet and bought the Zeiss 55 1.8 the reviews are amazing, 50 or 55 focal length to me can cover nearly everything, this will hold me down until Sigma and Tamron get new lenses ready,

Regards

Enjoy your new gear.

Thanks, Pal, will be a while until I get the chance but looking forward to customising the camera etc, and going out shooting

I have the Tamron 28-75 and love it, but I have the A7III so not sure how it performs on the RIII. That 42mp sensor will highlight any imperfections in a lens or your shooting technique. I also love my Zeiss 55 1.8. I used it on my old A7rii and the images are amazing.
