I've got some old Hensel Strobes (500W) which I want to start using outdoors. I've only ever used them indoors and was wondering if there was a way to make them portable for out door use.

Is there a cheap option to power one light for location shooting? What connections would I need?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but have you checked to see if Hensel offers something, or is it the case they do and it doesn't qualify as "cheap"?

When I was doing this kind of thing I was looking at Innovatronix as a good bang/buck ratio but they had been somewhat heavy. Seems like the line has been revamped:

The standard answer about this kind of question is that the PCB Vagabond line is the best all around from a price, support, output and weight perspective.

Yes I did look at Hensel, but the prices were enough to make you weep. Hence, I thought I'd test the waters here. I'll take a look at the links, thank you very much

Hi

The problem is that a battery must be designed for giving loads of power at once .For example running a laptop from a hensel.power pack will not be very long but it will manage to give you a lot of pops.for your strobes.

You could build something yourself with standard car batteries and an invertor but make sure you use a pure Sinus.

I have used Paul Buff Vagabonds with my old Hensel. Make sure you remove the modeling lamp or just turn it off to ensure you don't drain the battery quickly.

A Vagabond mini sells for USD 240.

A Godox AD600 TTL sells for USD 499. It gives you TTL and HSS functionality which might be useful for outdoor shooting.

Good luck and good light.

Yes, but he already has a Hensel. The Godox is a great choice if he didn't have a flash already.

Yes I saw that. As far as I can see, the Hensel does not support HSS. In the studio it doesn't matter, but for use outside, it can be beneficial.

Any reason why a car battery couldn't be used as someone suggested?

Unless you've got an EE degree and time to burn, it saves you little to no money relative to the Vagabond (loses money if you count hours required to research, order and assemble), weighs more, looks awkward, and exposes your clients to risk. I built one years ago and took precautions to over-spec the wiring and inverter and it still died - I think I spent $200 altogether and left myself high and dry with no warranty.
