I give Tony about %50 accuracy but he makes some valid points that I been kicking around in my head as well. I use to shoot m43 but have since sold my gear since I think it will eventually will be put out to pasture.

I kind of want your input on where the camera business is going ? Phones have crushed the PS market. They are competing with the intro DSLR/Mirrorless cameras as well. The bottom end of photography gear is falling out or a reduction in floor space is happening at a minimum.

This leads to the previous post about the Price of the New Sigma FF L camera. Do you think we are going to be facing a price hike in all cameras ? Are

Could you see just 2 camps of photographers ? Iphone users with add on lenses or much more expensive FF or Medium format gear costing an additional %50 more than current prices?.

Tony' latest Micro 4/3 is dead.

Tony' latest Micro 4/3 is dead.
Forgive my ignorance, but I have never heard of Tony North before. Micro Four Thirds will be dead when the last manufacturer stops making cameras, lenses and accessories for it. And this will only happen when no sufficient number of people continue buying this stuff. And this will only happen if full frame cameras come to the market which are not significantly larger or heavier than those with MFT sensors. And if they don't cost much more either.

Personally I value the small and lightweight, yet reasonably fast „pancake“ lenses a lot which are one of the many strong points of the micro four thirds format. And I very much doubt that it will be possible to make this kind of lenses for full frame sensors.

Not dead for a long time to come would be my bet :-)

Max

I am sure that it is; they will be something like a 45mm f/2.8 manual-focus.

I agree; but they do need to improve the 4/3 sensors.

Hello Alex,
Hello!

Shoot whatever works for you and let others do whatever they want - you will have much less to "worry" about.

Best,

Alex
yes of course. But if this Tony North happens to be one of those "influencers" with millions of followers then his opinion may actually change the course of history...

And since I have chosen micro four thirds as my everyday carry-along camera system beside the Sigma stuff I wouldn't want to see it disappear, especially not because of some YouTuber's opiniion!

Regards

Max

BTW: Blackmagic just these days released their long awaited "Pocket Cinema Camera 4k" (which is not "pocket" at all but about the size of a Sigma SD1...) - and guess which "dead" sensor it carries!

Hello!

I too enjoy - amongst others - Olympus gear since going digital in 2000 - and personally I don't think any "influencer" can or will change anything, no matter if it is Thom H., Tony N. or *insert-name-here".

In camera-"influencing" I feel we have now reached a state where flashlights (the Maglite stuff) in "survival/outdoor/prepping..." were a few years ago - one could not open any chanel without two or three new "this flashlight vs that flashlight" videos every week - even in this comparatively low cost (but highly "collectible") market, all influencers crying for this brand or that did not change anything. There simply was too much conflicting and contradicting information it seems. Now you don't see these videos any more, the "influencers" still being around.

With cameras it is just about the same to me nowadays - just look at all the various "new-item-sponsored" events where always the same "influencers" get carried to funky staged shoots and all produce the same content. And for everyone of them saying "A" there seem to be two saying "B". And my impression is the Sony-crowd going crazy about the Sony-hype stuff, the Nikon-crowd going crazy about the Nikon-hype stuff, the Oly-crowd going crazy about... and so on...; nowadays even chanels I liked to watch seem (to me) poisoned by the "influencer" stuff; AoP at Sony launch events... Thomas H. being more of a hip travel-photographer instead of the to me much more interesting creator he used to be. Ymmv of course.

In the end I think "influencing" is good for the "influencers" but neutral to the market in the long run.

Best,

Alex

One example: https://camerasize.com/compact/#720.383,487.667,ha,t

The Sony A7 is $798.00, the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III is $599.00.

The Samyang is $279.00, the Zuiko is $449.00.

Note: the Olympus is just an f/3.4 regarding dof.

Just to clarify, his name is Tony Northrup, not Tony North.

I predict a 24, 26, or 30 MP BSI m4/3 sensor will be made soon, and when it is it will breathe new life into the m4/3 world. Over the next 5 years more ILC bodies and lenses will be sold over the last 5 years. Very few of the camera sales will be DSLR bodies. That means more mirrorless cameras will be sold than were sold since mirrorless digital cameras came on the market. Since the m4/3 system is the most compact and mature mirrorless system, m4/3 will still take a major portion of the growing mirrorless market. I believe this means m4/3 will actually do very well over the next 5 years, and more m4/3 cameras and lenses will sell in the next 5 years than have sold in the history of m4/3 up to now.

I think he does educational training videos on lynda.com amongst other things. His style irritated, I seem to remember. Tends to make you take his views less seriously, which is actually unfair.

Oh, I thought he was talking about Peter's brother.

;)

Thanks for starting the thread.

One wonders:

- Can or why aren't all these computational advances we see being applied to smart phones be also applied to enthusiast cameras and up.

- Why don't advanced cameras have internal storage and broadband capabilities. Bring more of what phones do to cameras.

I thought that was one of the things that would make Samsung cameras become popular, but for some reason Samsung pulled out of the photography market. I also thought the Sony mirrorless cameras were going to end up with lots of available apps. That didn't happen either. I wonder why. I wonder if Sony killed that intentionally, or if it just didn't seem like anyone wanted any of the apps. I wonder if Sony might have been a little short-sighted with their decision to stop making cameras with apps.

I'd like to see Sigma put Wi-Fi and a touch screen in their new camera, and then offer open-source apps.

Like it or not, Tony and his wife Chelsea are popular. They have a YouTube channel with over a million subscribers. Not many in the photography world can say that. They've been on YouTube for years and years, and they have hundreds of videos . . . many with more than 200,000 views. With a total of more than a hundred million views, their channel is up there with Jared Polin's channel, famous in part for his "I SHOOT RAW" and "Fro Knows Photo" slogans. Even Matt Granger doesn't have as many views as the Northrups.
