hello gang

as you might remember I am setting up the voting form for quite a few challenges now. also when I got my new camera and was not participating a lot in this forum. it runs on my own servers, all those images and are also costing me bandwith since some of the images are pretty large.

so far so good although I don't think anyone realizes.

but the main issue is the fact that I am ill and don't know how long I can do it and also want to do it.

would there be someone else who could take over? I think the voting system I developed is fine now and works Ok for everyone so it would be a shame not to proceed with this.

hope to hear

Can you give me an idea of how much bandwidth and space the challenges typically take up? Also, what type of server side scripting do you currently use?

I don't know how to do the coding for the page, this would be my big problem.

I can get the web space with frontpage exts. but that is where I have a problem, what do I do and how to do it.

No, I'm not a Pro, but I did read the Olympus Talk Forum last night.

I must say that I am very disappointed by the fact that there is almost no response. actually that also does it for me right now. don't really know what to say. and what to think either.

thanks for the interest back to the tech stuff (that is how they say it ehm?)

*

bandwith no idea right now since I divided the stuff onto two of my servers. the larger versions of the pictures to one and the smaller ones to the actual voting page

strange this is. I am sure I will regret my post later and I can not edit it after pressing the 'post' button.

people... i will never understand them

off to bed again maybe I see things different tomorrow when there is some light maybe

I can code raw static html, but I haven't done any Javascript programming, which is what the current voting uses, but it looks fairly easy to modify the boilerplate.

it is easy especially since I did all the work of figuring out how it would be best. all you nee now it an addendum as to prevent people from voting for less than 5 pictures but I guess someone will stand up and make it beautiful

..that you're not well. You have done an outstanding job making the challenges intuitive. I just know someone will step in and take over. After all, the programming is done and that's the main part. I just hope you feel better soon.

Mariette,

I'm sure there are many who would be glad to help but, like myself, are shall we say; 'challenged' when it comes to this sort of stuff. Someone will step up.

So sorry to hear that you are ill; hope things get better for you.

Mariette,

Thanks for the time and effort you have given to the challenges. I don't visit the forum too often but have really enjoyed the challenges thanks to you and many other folks. I have learned so much participating and the voting is perfect.
My prayers are with you as you battle your illness.

Mariette G,

One of the secrets to living life to its fullest is knowing when to say "yes" and when to say "no." I have friends who simply cannot say "no" to any request, and find themselves stressed to meet all of their obligations.

You are ill! You have taken the "right" first step to notify everyone on this forum that you can no longer continue to "serve" by setting up this voting mechanism for every challenge.

Perhaps someone has the technical skill and resources to continue the work you have started, or maybe no one will step forward. In either case, you have done all you can reasonably do.

On behalf of the forum, please accept our sincere "thanks" for all of the work you have done. You went "above and beyond" the call of duty to setup this elaborate voting machine and offer it again and again for our recent challenges. While none of us may fully understand the amount of work or money this cost you, your work WAS appreciated! In every Challenge that you prepared the voting machine, you were showered with praise and words of thanks. But sometimes words of thanks are simply not enough, just like sometimes words of apology do not erase a "wrong."

Mariette, I think you are doing the right thing. You are, in essence, notifying us that you can no longer offer this service to our forum. Furthermore, you are offering to assist someone to get this voting machine moved to another server and offering to help them with the transition. Honestly, this is ALL you can do! If someone steps forward and accepts this duty, then your work will continue. If no one steps forward, we will have to find another manner to manage the voting.

Mariette, thanks again. I sincerely hope that your health problem gets better. Please know that you are among friends here and i hope you count me as one of those.

Cordially,

jim

Well put, my friend.

I suppose there are others out there that, like me, would LOVE to take over the responsibility, but are hesitant to step forward yet because of a fear of the unknown.

Not having any expertise in managing a website makes me fearful of accepting such a challenge. So I wait, hoping someone with more knowledge of this type of activity comes forward.

Mariette, if you made it public what your health condition is, I'm afraid I missed it. Now I'm fearful that it may be very, very bad.

May God bless you, and, as others have said, your work here is appreciated.
Mariette G,

I'd offer to pitch in, but I haven't even managed to find time to simply submit an entry in the past two challenges, much less handle the voting.

What Jim (Sandman) said expresses exactly how I feel as well (only he did a far better job than I could have of saying it). Thanks again for all your efforts, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have admired your remarkable abilities as a photographer and your abilities in setting up a remarkable web page that streamlined the voting process. I would absolutely love to take this off your hands, but I don't know the first thing about how.. I don't even have a website with my pictures on them other than Imagestation...

I shudder to consider what you are having to deal with at this time. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers, as you will be with many members of this forum. Don't take the lack of prompt postings too hard, as most folks simple do not have the skills to do what you have done.

If you think you could walk me through it, I'd be happy to give it a shot... but you may want to practice rolling your eyes in exasperation beforehand. :)

Take care...
Sue

Last year I went through some tough times. Sandman said it well. Get better. What you are seeing here in peole that are not technologist. Hopefully there is one out there, but if we have to go back to threads it ain't the end. Get better and smell a rose now and then.

Stinson.
