How does X-T3 face/eye AF compare to Sony a6300 for candids?

Good day everyone. I'm a long time Sony shooter (first a6000 as my first real camera, then a6300) and I've changed to a Nikon shooter with now a D850 as my primary body.

I'm looking to replace my a6300 as my sidekick body because I'm annoyed by the miserable white balance, the crappy handling (it's too small, why no touchscreen?, and silly menus even for someone who's used it for years), and the ridculous expense of a non-awful moderate telephoto zoom and a 35 mm-e (23 f/2 from Fuji is $400, 24 f/1.8 from Sony is $1,100!)

I have a pre-order in for a Z6, but the crappy autofocus reports I'm getting for the Z7 has turned me off - I want something that's easy and reliable with AF for photographing people (like my 4 year old running around) and that's smaller and less conspicuous than my D850. I also don't particularly want a FF sidekick body - yes, the Z6 is smaller than the D850 but the lenses aren't any smaller.

Fuji's appealing to me as a single system (yes, perhaps even to replace the D850 someday), but I was unimpressed by the AF of the X-T20 I rented a year ago.

So now that the X-T3 is out, how are people finding the AF for candid shots of people, particularly small kids playing?

X-T3 Eye AF is a bit behind Sony’s but as long as you dont shoot action with this function, it is totally usable.

AF-C tracking is about on par with my A7Riii.
I am using my X-T20 for 1 year now, and my 1st choice to pair with it is the 23mm f2.

With this combo, focus is quick enough, and my main subject is my 5 year old son. As you probably know, not a slow moving subject 80% of the time.

If i want to take a portrait, i will use the 55-200 or now the 35mm 1.4. With the last one i don't try moving subjects (which is fine as its not my walk around focal distance, so i just pick it up for something particular and not candids).

As for the X-T20 plus the 55-200, it handled very well 5-7 year old kids playing soccer at a tournament with cloudy weather so....its certainly not bad/slow.

The X-T3 is said to be much better at tracking and have eye-Af with AF-C.

Thank you. Good to know it's been doing well for you. The X-T20 is my alternative plan - and man, that lower price is certainly appealing.

There are a lot of details in the DPR review abot face eye detection, obviously not yet on par with Sony (A7 III )
