Would you buy another S2 now?

I lost my S2 and the insurance is sending me cash vouchers. I am now wondering whether to buy another S2 immediately or wait a while.

I would be gutted if Fuji brings out something within a few months of me getting another S2. On the other hand, supplies of new fuji cameras has always been very short, so it will probably take 6 months for a new camera to become available after launch, which is too long to wait.

What would you do?

If I lost mine and ins. paid for it, I would get another. I do not think fuji will have another cam out before next spring/summer (available). It may be the best bang for the buck still going. If money is no object, then wait a few months and see what becomes available..

Did you like your s2 a lot? Did it serve you well? These would be my deciding questions....

I think Rob said it well...if you look at how pleased you were with your S2, and if it did well for you and you were happy with it, I'd buy another one with the insurance settlement. If you were not happy with it, perhaps you ought to look at another camera.

I suspect it will be at least 2004 before another Fuji S-SLR model is actually introduced, since the S2 is actually holding its own position in the various markets where Fuji has targeted the camera.

It's very possible that the S2 will be maintained in production for some time..it's all the camera many people need, R&D costs have probably been totally recovered, and the camera does very well sales-wise I think.

I just talked to a friend this morning who is a professional photographer and has started using the S2 Pro in his work. He reported to me that his Fuji rep (that sold him the cameras) told him that the S3 is indeed coming, but not before next summer. He had no details about the camera itself - apparently it is quite a source of speculation even within the ranks of Fuji reps.

Didn't you just answer your own question Ray? I think you are right about the "announcement" to "in-the-hand" lag time, although 6 months is less of a reality these days.

I would seriously consider the 10D, but would probably still go with the S2. It just still seems to hold the lead for best skin tone and detail without costing $8000!

It's highly unlikely the S2 will come out before 2004; and it's not looking very likely another 6-12 megapixel camera will be released before then, too.

Alternatively, you could wait for the D2X, which I believe will be out there sooner than the S3. But then, it will probably be almost as expensive as the D1X.

Heehe, yeah, I know but I didn't want it to be true. I was hoping someone to tell me the S3 will be out next month and I should wait - well I live in hope.

Yep, I liked my S2. It served me well. So I am 95% decided to buy another one with the settlement - which incidentally will be in the form of Jessops vouchers.

Jessops is the largest camera chain in the UK. But I just learnt today that they do not hold any S2 in stock. Their web site states 4-6 weeks lead time :-( This long lead time is partly the cause for my indecision to buy another S2.

That's how much I like the first. If I had 2, then I wouldn't need to swicth lenses so often. Replacing the first when insurance payed me would be easy = yes.

At the very least, I would go out and rent every other camera for a weekend just to see what they do. I just don't believe, with the use of C1 and other camera's raw files, that the S2 has anything over them. It would simply come down to finding the camera with the most accurate focusing ability. If the S2 won out, I would look into a very good film scanner and wait until the new cameras arrive.

Only if you have a pressing need for great pictures with maximum detail and very little noise. Shooting in 12 meg raw it still surpasses ALL the 6 meg cameras by a large margin. Nothing has changed at this point. Of course the Eos 10s is KING if you have the bucks.

When I went for the S2. At this level (sub $2K DSLRs), it's the best of the bunch, IMHO. At the next threshold is the old, bold Canon 1D. And then the Ne Plus Ultra Canon 1Ds. But against the Nikon D100, Canon 10D and Sigma SD9, it's the winner.

I was talking to Gary fong today and asked him if he knew if fuji was coming out with a new camera soon because I need another one as well and he said don't look for anything untill next April, but who really knows, I am just going to get a backup s2 while the price is right, and if somthing comes out that helps me pruduce better results then I will sell them and move up to the 3 if there is going to be one that is. But for know I love the S2

Ray,I'm now on my third S2 in as many weeks I'm now waiting for my fourth which jessops have told me about four to five weeks, thats only because ive insisted on it coming from fuji direct.
Regards,Andy.

...except for the 10s... I guess you meant 1Ds, since the S2 does outperform the 10D (even today, after two Canon generations).

Certainly concur with your overall assessment: except for those rare and seldom-occuring moments where resolution, dynamic range, color reproduction and noise "suddenly" come to the top of your head, I would definitely try something else!

8-)

I read your note. I obtained my S2 from a jessops store. I suggest you log onto web site and look for the phone for the bigger stores and ring around. I found an S2 and they held it for me for several days. They were very helpful in this respect. I have learned that because of short supply people are multi ordering from several stores so it might be possible to get a cancelled order by chance.Best of luck
