Best Travel/Landscape Lens (budget minded) for A7III

We all have to find compromises in our equipment. While I would like to move from my 16-35 f4 to the 16-35 GM, that will have to wait as I have other purchases to make (like I just bought an A9).

Here's a good one. I've seen used examples for about $300 or less.

Nikon AF FX NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Fixed Zoom Lens with Auto Focus

I use my Sigma 16mm 1.4 all the time on my a7III. $450 new...you have a relatively small, super sharp, f1.4 general purpose lens approx 24mm equivalent so it is great for interiors, street photography, landscape.

No matter how many lenses you own, you will never carry them all and you will always miss some shots. In my opinion, this is misguided thinking. For example if you take a single 35/1.4 prime, you will miss many shots you otherwise would have taken with a midrange zoom, but by forcing yourself on a single focal lens, you will bring home other shots, which you would have never thought about with your zoom.

We always miss shots. But we take other shots instead. So what?

Agree completely. People compliment you on the pictures you take - if they are good. They don't blame you for the pictures you don't take.

That leads me to go one step further: One of the secrets of having a reputation as a good photographer is not to show people all the boring, not so good or outright bad pictures you also take. Even for Cartier-Bresson, who had a very good eye, the vast majority of the frames didn't make it beyond the contact sheet - as is the case with most good photographers.

I spent a week in Maine this month and the 16-35 f4 was on my camera almost the entire time.

There are numerous wonderful wide angle / uwa primes, but I think if you are budget limited the 16-35 is the way to go.

For the 55 / 85, for autofocus, look into the Sony 55mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8. I wasn't a fan of the 85 f1.8 personally but most people like it as a cost effective portrait prime. If you want to consider manual focus for the 85 as a landscape prime, I like the c/y mount Zeiss 85 f2.8 -- lightweight, very good image quality.

To save money, consider buying used. fredmiranda.com has an excellent buy/sell board.
Thanks! I was able to pick up a 16-35 f4 used locally (well not yet, picking up tonight) for $825, which seems like a great deal (a few scratches on the barrel but doesn't look like anything crazy).

Most of my shots are on the wider end, I only wanted to go with a 50mm or 85mm for the occasional times where I feel I need more reach (shooting down a street, a portrait, something that just needs more reach vs 35mm, etc. The 55mm is just a bit too expensive for a lens that will be secondary.

The Sigma 24-105 f4 Art w/adapter seems like a decent choice if I can find one used for a good price. I'll have to read up on how well the adapter works (I remember some issues when I was considering Sony a few years ago, but that's likely changed I'm guessing).
I would rather stay native as a personal preference. the art plus adaptor is heavy as well which I stay away from when on travel

pls remember that in a pinch you can go crop mode on your 16-35 covering your 50mm needs albeit at a reduced MP count.

I personally travel with a 16-35/4 and a 55/1.8

and that covers more than 90% of my needs. I am like you when I travel where I am mostly a wide shooter

So excited, my A7III comes next week! I've done a bit of research for lenses the last week or so but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Most of my photography is travel based, but I do a lot of landscapes as well. I'm trying not to break the bank completely, so what's my best option?

So far I'm thinking the Sony 16-35mm f/4 (or Canon w/adapter equiv) and maybe a prime, either 50mm or 85mm. The Sigma 24-105mm f/4 looks like a good option as well.

I really want something on the wide end, hence the 16-35. Is there a prime wide angle I could go with instead (and save a little hopefully) combined with the 24-105 f/4?

Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Life is full of decisions....I'm planning on purchasing a Sony A7iii and will be pairing it with the Tamron 2.8 28-75 since I'm also budget minded and limited. Based on reviews, which have been great, and the price range, looks like a great option compared to the pricey Sony Zooms. Just returned from a couple weeks in Europe and used a 18-135 (about the same lens price point as used my Sony aps-c camera) for everything and with great results. Didn't really long for any more reach and most shots were taken nearer the wider focal lengths versus the longer focal lengths. A few times I could have used a tad wider focal length but....
