hi,
  1. based on your experience , what’s the max iso for low light video recording you would recommend ?
  2. why does crop35 mode result in a higher quality video than regular mode?

I do not have this camera, but ISO performance is very subjective. I would guess that clean footage would come at about 12800 and usable up to 20000.

As for the crop vs full sensor, it has to do with readout. When cropped to APS-C, you get all the information from the APS-C portion of the sensor. When it uses the full sensor, it actually skips pixels, so you are not getting a full readout. This results in better performance in APS-C mode vs full frame mode.

This does have a pretty good advantage in that you can adapt lenses with focal reducers. For example, 50/1.4 would approximately translate to a 35/1.0. This would give you the same field of view as the 50mm would on full frame, but it would increase the light hitting the sensor. This would improve its low light performance since you are getting about an extra stop of light coming in the camera. Basically, if you needed ISO 12,800 for correct exposure, you would now need ISO 6400.

makes sense. any inexpensive aps-c lenses you can recommend for video recording (good AF)?

Unfortunately, the only APS-C lens I own is the kit 18-55..or is it 16-55? I have not used it in years, so I cannot comment.

The full frame Sony/Zeiss has incredible AF on the a7iii and the a9. I also use the 28/2 and 85/1.8 and have no complaints about AF on those bodies. If you are concerned about low light, there is a focal reducers for A-Mount lenses to E-Mount. You could use any A-Mount f/1.4 lenses and have an equivalent of approximately f/1.0! This would take the a7riii in APS-C mode very close to something like the a7s. You would most likely lose AF however as even with the LA-EA3, there is no video AF on either the A9 or A7iii.

The Sony sensors are very good and ISO 12800 at 1/50 shutter @ f/1.8 would expose a very dim room. Also, more important than exposing is contrast, i.e. flat light looks horrible. You need some light on your subject otherwise the footage will look very bad. I am not sure what type of video work you do, but I always use lighting now and I have no issues even with the GH4 with the Panasonic 12-35/2.8 and I have shot some very dark venues! This not only keeps my ISOs down, it creates more depth in the footage.

watch the comparison video on youtube. the a7iii is much better low light video. Generally, more mega pixel sensors perform worse in video, for low and high light.

I'm happy to hear the a7iii performs well!! I believe the a99ii was an exception however. It manages full sensor readout in both full frame and aps-c. The result is very sharp video :-)

SEL 50mm f/1.8 OSS

SEL 35mm f/1.8 OSS

There are good sony lenses, and there are inexpensive sony lenses, but not much in the way of good inexpensive sony lenses.
