Hello,

I am currently considering switching from Canon to a Sony Alpha 7 III. The only lens that is holding me back is my Tamron 150-600 G2, which absolutely is my favourite piece of kit.

I know that there is an A-Mount version of this lens. Selling my 150-600 and buying the Sony version plus the LA-EA3 adapter would be the same price compared to keeping my lens and buying a Metabones. Maybe the Metabones is even less, if I can find a Mark IV version used. I also would have the advantage to having the possibility to use other Canon lenses my father ownes.

So my question is: Are there any benefits buying the Sony version when it comes to Auto Focus? And what is with the optical stabilizer of the Canon version? Can I use that with the adapter?

Thank you very much!

Kind regards,

Maximilian

As far as I know the AF performance of the combo Metabones + Tamron 150-600 G2 is quite good. I'd keep the Canon version of this lens because it has OS which works way better than the IBIS of the A7III at longer focal lengths.

Thanks a lot!

I just found out that with the newest generation (A7 III and A7R III) eye autofocus is possible with adapted lenses. In that case the Metabones is definitely the way to go for my needs.

fwiw, you should be able to get eyeaf on those bodies with the mc-11/tamron lenses, it works on my a9.

I don't think the Sony combo is faster, if anything I think it's slower than metabones/mc11.
Thank you very much!

As far as I know there is no Sony version of the G2 Tamron 150-600 lens. So the only option for you is to buy an adapter (Metabones) for use with your current lens.

I don't think your Tamron 150-600 is going to cut it adapted via MB or MC-11, as it will be limited to 3fps bursts with AF engaged on all frames.

You are better off selling it and grab a Sigma 150-600C, which works like a native lens through the MC-11, it's pretty good in AF-S (EyeAf included) and decent in AF-C, including 10fps shooting with full AF, just do not expect to be to able to do BIFs or really fast action sports with it..

I aware that. Just for myself, I already own FE 100-400 GM and FE 1.4x TC so no reason to get either Tamron and Sigma version that works via adapter. I am waiting to see a native-mount lens - the rumored FE 200-600, future Sigma FE 500/4.0 OS Sport or even future Sony FE 500/4.0 GM to fill the gap of a super-tele lens in my lineup after sold Canon 500L/4.0 IS.

Only native mount lenses can fully take advantage of Sony AF technology. EF-mount Sigma 500/4.0 OS Sport for example although works very well on A9 via MC-11 but still doesn't work in a few AF settings, AF is fast but not as fast as 400 GM and likely FE 100-400 GM as well for example.

Hi there I just received my Sony E-Mount G2 150-600mm today
Don't aware Sigma or Tamron released an E-mount 150-600 zoom?

There is GT version without VC.

I'm interested on this thread and your answer, of course. Did you try them or are making an educated guess? May I know on what you are basing your guess, if it is a guess, if it's not a guess, what is your source. Thank you!
Thank you very much!

I use a Sigma 150-600 C / MC-11 on an A7R3 and it will track BIF just fine. I have successfully tracked flying Golden-eyes with this combo and they are plenty fast.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm hearing good things about the MC-11 adapter and since it's a sigma I'm thinking it should do a better job on its own brand than with a tamron lens. I wish these lenses were stocked locally and could try before buy...

Here is the deal...

I was tired of reading everyone's opinions because there is no solid info.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. The Tamron seems to be much sharper than the Sigma version so I also chose the Tamron.

I have a A mount and EF mount being delivered.

I also have a E3 and Mc-11 on the way. I will test them both.

I'm REALLY hoping the MC-11 performance wins. It means I don't need to carry two adapters (I will always keep the MC-11 because most of my colleagues use Canon so I will have a lot of glass options)

I am using an A7RIII.

I will report back ASAP. I'll just go shoot my dog running around and stuff and maybe head down to shoot some surfers.

Fingers crossed
