Credit card bill Due Tuesday.. so I dont want to pay it off not knowing I will ever get a lens, and sure dont want to pay interest on something I dont have.. So i will just wait till these things get in stock if ever and decide then.. For now I will keep using my 300MM PF and TC. I know if I paid the card off and then had to cancel anyway and card credited I would just spend that plus balance for something I dont need :)

I was out with my 200-500 the other day and I missed quite a few shots because of minimum focus distance when some birds landed in close, its making me double think the 500PF anyway being its even a longer min focus distance.. I guess the way its going this thing wont be around till at least next year anyway..

The little PF is doing just fine anyway

Nice shots!

1. I didn't think a retailer could ask for payment in those circumstances :-(

2. That's why I use a Tamron 150-600 Gen 2. Sometimes that wide end is handy :-)

3. Agree on the 300PF. Very sweet little thing, especially for plane travel. Sharp as :-)

4. I'm next on the list for the 500PF... its getting to be a long wait. Nikon must be having some sort of problem. Hope you get yours soon.

This lack of news of a second wave of shipments is disheartening - but I suppose it's just not possible to quickly ramp up production on big-glass lenses. Which leads me to ask - just how many can Nikon produce in a month - is it 100 or 1,000? Just how different are the manufacturing challenges anyway - it seemed to me that Nikon came up with a good number of 200-500 (similar size glass?) in fairly short time - could it be the PF element that's the bottleneck?

By the way, are you using the the AF minimum focus distance limiter on your 200-500? That will increase your MFD from 2.2m to 8m.

I think I'll hang in there with my preorder... it sure would be nice to get one by my birthday (early December) or even as a Christmas present! :-)

I’m quite surprised to hear that (in the US) when you pre-order, you are actually charged at the time the order is placed. Is that usual practice?

Here (UK) the I’ve never had a pre-order do that. Sometimes a check and a pre-auth is made on the card (and that can only be held a limited time). It’s only when the item is ready for dispatch that the actual payment taken.

I’ve preordered a few things over the years with a view that if they didn’t seem as good on actual release / review I’d kill the order. Fortunately, I never had any regrets on the D500 and 200-500mm. Had I been in the position of laying out real money 2 to 3 months in advance I would never have done that!

With the 500PF I didn’t order. I just can’t work out whether it’s the right lens for me. I really love the light weight aspect (I have the 300PF) but I equally value the flexibility of the 200-500. So, I’m hoping I can mull it over long enough for Nikon to release the 600mm f/5.6 PF...

Will you get the refund in time?

Seems wrong that any store should require payment in full for a pre-order, especially at that expense.

No, it is not usual practice in US. Payment through a Paypal linked account is a notable exception.

Yes most places dont charge card till it is shipped, They say if an item is out of stock they do not, but pre order they did, funny thing is the didn't charge the card till release day, I placed order a few weeks before that day.. I think they screwed up actually, when viewing my order showed it as in stock.. but you know how it is when you deal with most support desks.. they really have no clue, so I canceled.. now have to make sure my card gets credited back or there will be hell to pay

In the UK some retailers ask for a £100 pre-order deposit. This may be to discourage multiple orders from one customer.

I avoid situations where even a £100 deposit is requested.

Let’s hope your retailer cancels the order on time Monday for the credit card issuer to reverse the charges or you may be paying interest.

My card got credited back on Mon 2 days before grace period ended so no interest at least... now to just wait or try a pre order somewhere they dont charge card.. but at this late of a time, I would be so far back on the list I might as well wait till pre orders all filled and I see it in stock somewhere

I am pleased you got your credit - and no interest charge.

You could try contacting smaller Nikon pro grade retailers and ask them how many they have on their waiting list. If it is only 2 or 3 you might get one within 2 months.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread I consider a holding deposit of $£100 as reasonable for a big ticket item. There is a huge difference between $100 and $3,599.

I cancelled my order for the Tesla Model 3 last month and I cancelled an order for a Wimberley lens plate this morning. I am sure this is of great interest to photographers.

Good for you.... I just pre ordered the 500MM PF today from another dealer... just in case you would like to know

I shoot a lot of wildlife. For most of those shots, I would say you need a 500 or 600mm.

I only have the 300mm PF lens + 1.4 tc.

I find this lens very good for a lot of photography in Africa, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and even small birds that are close enough.

Everybody wants a 600mm f5.6 lens...

I use the D500 -- what on earth do you photograph with such a (900mm equivalent) combination?

It is SO LIMITING -- most birds/animals will be heavily cropped... for so much power a zoom lens would be much more useful!

I am waiting for the 400mm f5.6 PF they promised -- if it is small and light, the combo with DX should be more than good enough for most wildlife/bird shots for me.

That plus a zoom lens like 70-300mm on FX should be a very good allround combination...

Thanks,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Hint: it is NOT the Big Five. ;-) Try getting shots of robins, warblers and the like - unless you are extremely lucky, they'll never get close enough for your 630mm effective length. I still find myself cropping quite a bit with my 500mm PF + TC14 every so often...

What's the business phrase, "Location, location, location." I envy Friedrich's ready access to amazing wildlife that are comfortable in the vicinity of humans. My reality, is that the area wildlife and birds are less comfortable around humans. Here's how I use an effective 1,050mm focal length...and it's a crop.

Interesting seller. Normally, the CC that is used to purchase will not be charged until the merchandise is shipped or received.

Hmm, you must live a charmed life Friedrich! I can think of numerable times when I wanted more reach than what my 300mm +1.4TC on my D500 provides. In fact, on my last trip to Africa, I brought my 500mm lens and found I used it much more than I ever expected and much of that time with a 1.4TC on my DX camera's, both for birds (a bee eater catching a bee, a goshawk hunting) and even animals to isolate the subject (see one below for a lion cub). Closer to home, I have found that even a 500mm plus 1.4TC is not enough on many occasions. For example, trying to photograph a peregrine falcon nest on the rocks over the Pacific Ocean or wolves in Yellowstone I ended up renting the 800mm lens with the 1.2TC and still wanted more reach (that is 1500mm equivalent)! So a 600mm f/5.6 PF lens would be very appealing for much of my photography (and better than the 500mm f/5.6 which I have been fortunate to have since it was released and have used extensively)!

Thanks to Locatz, Ricardo00 and Bill Ferris for insight into your needs for a BIG lens -- it surely looks like you need a lot of power for distant shots!

I also now appreciate more the privilege of photographing from up close with my smaller lenses...:-D

Instead of boring you with a lot of pictures posted here, feel free to look at my latest pics from Masai Mara this month -- mostly taken with 70-200mm f4 and 300mm f4 and D600 or D500 -- Facebook -- Friedrich von Horsten.

I have more respect for you guys now!

God bless,
