I thought i'd show you guys a few of my recent shots with the Huawei P20 Pro. It seems to performs quite well in most situations i thrown at it so far. Obviously it's no DSLR and barely a pocket camera, but it's getting still a great performer to be a mobile phone.

These photos were all shot as RAW, then processed to get the look and feel i wanted.

But i found out that not only the processing matters, also the camera application you shoot with is important. I got somewhat better looking and cleaner RAW files from other apps than Huawei's own, there seems to be some sort of internal processing applied on their RAW files.

So i have taken a different route and are now shooting most of my RAW files with another camera application to get the most out of the camera. I even experimented with extracted pure bayer data from the sensor itself in order to maximize dynamic range.
You mean that different camera apps produce different DNGs?

Which one you prefer?

So far I was trying some only for JPG output. And frankly there was not much of a difference in 40MPix mode.

I might be wrong but i do think there is a difference in the quality the dng files you get from other camera applications compared to Huawei's own. It could just be me chasing ghosts who knows hehe.

You are familiar with the well known worm like noise patterns coming from P20 Pro dng files well they are still here but to a lesser extent. The noise appears to be more noise like and less wormy like, which makes it somewhat easier to process. This helped me get cleaner processed raw photos.

Now i mainly use FreeDCam for raw photos and a working Google Camera port for jpegs. But i also use apps like Snap Camera, a recently released version of the camera app for the latest Asus gaming phone, and sometimes Hedgecam 2.

Most of these produces fine jpegs with less compression artefacts and without any sharpening and noise reduction than Huawei's own application does. It makes the jpegs useful even for post processing without sharpening halos and the watercolour look.

Thanks - I have to give them a try :-D

Thank you very much! there are several reasons why they are downscaled. First one is they are all exported for webpublishing at 2048 pixels along the longest edge. Second, i saw no reason to post fullres shots here as i'm not doing a review of the device.

I think your photos are awesome! Incredible clarity and detail. Great job. I dont see the plasticity that some are mentioning. They look good to me. Of course I am not a pixel peeper and I remember when most people used a Kodak Instamatic and were perfectly content with it.

If you didnt know these came from a P20 you would swear they came out of a regular camera. Maybe even a mirrorless or DSLR.

I can't see the plasticity in the images either. Possibly due to resized images maybe?

Thanks a lot guys, i appreciate it! maybe i should never have mentioned which 'camera' i were using and just let everyone guess. But the EXIF would have given it away regardless. :)

Anyways, some fresh new shots from last night when i were out downtown shooting an event.

One with the blackwhite sensor, unprocessed except for straightening and some cropping.

Magnus,

I use, and am delighted with, a P20 Pro. But after numerous attempts I've given up on DNG and now stick entirely to JPG at 40mpx. I gave up on DNG primarily because of what I thought was unworkable vignetting; I just couldn't seem to get the pics right in LR Classic.

How do you deal with this vignetting yourself?

I understand that vignetting is a issue and i had that too until i decided to take care of it. So i tried different solutions and in Lightroom Mobile you can use a Huawei lens profile which reduces it. You can download a lens profile here, it's not perfect as it needs to be tweaked. But it gets rid of most of the vignetting from RAW files.

If you are using Capture One Pro then you can simply remove it by using the vignetting tools it has. The link above works with Lightroom.

For anyone using Capture One I would recommend creating a LCC file. It will give uniform lighting and no color cast.

Thanks for this. I'm looking at purchasing the P20 Pro. I saw another user state that the extreme vignetting and 'red circle' at the centre of the image is problematic. Have you encountered the red circle issue? I have the free version of Lightroom Mobile--can you install the Huawei lens profile on this version, or does it need to be the paid version?

The vignetting only happens when you shoot in Pro mode with the colour sensor as no internal correction is applied. However you can correct most of it in Lightroom Mobile even without installing a lens profile.

As i normally edit my photos at home i have installed the lens correction profile there, i have yet to test if there is a way to install it on the mobile edition of Lightroom. But you can use the Huawei profile which is in Lightroom Mobile, it kinda works for the P20 Pro or you can adjust the vignetting manually until your dark corners dissapear.

The red circle you mentioned is something i have never heard of before or even experienced.

I'm using the paid version of Lightroom Mobile plus a few other apps for raw editing when i'm out shooting. It's pretty cheap per month and useful when editing. If you want something else to edit with then there's Photo Mate R3 which is pretty good and Snapseed for jpeg's.

Yes vignetting is pretty easy to remove. Red circle is meant probably vignetting coupled with green tinting of corners. Green and red are complementary so when you white balance for center you have greenish corners, when balancing for corners you have reddish center.

Yes, in the RAW image I've seen a red color cast in the centre, on my Mate 9 pro. In Capture One you can take an image of a uniform white object (I used my Passport color checker). Than you can create an LCC file which coorects all color casts and vignetting. You can aply that LCC correction to all RAW files. You have to create it only once.
