hi, this is a question from my friend...

he has a D100 and he still cannot figure out how to use the LCD when taking pictures, the only way is to use the viewfinder...

when he is taking pictures, he tries many buttons and still cannot turn on the lcd screen...

but last time, when i went to a hiking trip, a guy using a nikon digital SLR camera, showed me the LCD screen and took some shots....(not sure if the model is d100 though)

can anyone give me a hand?

thanks!

sorry.. but there's no way to use the LCD when taking a picture. The CCD is only exposed to light when the mirror flips up... and that only happens when you press the shutter.

only after the fact.

No SLR can do that...sorry.

An SLR from has a mirror that diverts the image from the lens to the viewfinder...then when the user presses the shutter button, the mirror flips up, the shutter opens exposing the sensor and the image is captured. Thus the sensor does not constantly see the image from the lens as is the case with a point and shoot camera.

The person you saw much have been previewing an image they had taken prior, then when back to shooting mode by pressing the shutter...

--No, you can not view on the LCD. With an DSLR the mirror makes this impossible. You may view the photo after it is taken and their are multiple screens available during viewieng such as Histogram, Highlights and setting info.etc

Your friend may have seen someone using the Nikon CoolPix 5700, which many people believe is an SLR, because the resemblance externally is very much the same. (Or one of the Olympus Esomethings.) And while it's true that there's no viewfinder, there's also no interchangeable lens, and no focal plane shutter behind the lens. So you can view on the LCD screen, which many times is very useful. Doing a "worms eye view" of the world using a d100 requires me to get down and dirty. Using a 5700, I can fold out the LCD to shoot the image at ground level, and still look respectable at the dinner party later.

Make pictures, don't take them - it leaves more for others.

thanks for all your replies =)

hm... but i'm sure the guy i saw from the hiking trip uses a heavy duty SLR digital camera...
maybe i mixed the pics in view mode and take-picture mode....

i was amazed... the guy said, he just added couple lens and the outcome of the waterfall picture is awesome!!!

eecow....
yep, it's true, an SLR can not preview via the LCD screen.

Funny how we get used to doing this with digicams. It can be a neat thing but I don't mind the viewfinder in the D100 it is an awesome camera.

Phil's wonderful D100 review explains exactly why.

For those who are new to digital SLR's it's worth noting that they don't provide a live preview image like consumer digital cameras. This is because of the reflex mirror, mechanical shutter and design of the sensor (which can't be used to provide a video feed). The LCD is only "On" if you have image review enabled (after taking the shot), when you're navigating menus or reviewing images in play mode.

eecow - I purchased an ebook called Complete Guide to the Nikon D100 by Thom Hogan http://www.bythom.com/index.htm It is very well done book on all the features of the D100 and goes into great detail about operating the camera. It is a highly recommended book for any D100 owner.

You might try a Nikon DR-3, which is a 90-degree viewfinder
adapter. You might need a little plastic adapter, whose
part number escapes me, to mount it on a D100.
